Münchaurach Monastery
Monastery Münchaurach is a former convent of Benedictine in the same district of the municipality Aurachtal in Bavaria .
history
The monastery consecrated to Saint Peter (first mentioned in 1139) was founded by Count Goswin von Höchstadt and his son, Count Palatine Hermann von Stahleck . The monastery, which belonged to Ansbach-Bayreuth , was destroyed in the Peasants' War, restored in 1528 and dissolved in 1532. The monastery buildings were completely destroyed. Hiltegund is venerated by Münchaurach as a local saint . The facility is used today by the Evangelical Lutheran parish Aurachtal of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria .
A Romanesque decorative floor was found during renovation work in 2012.
The place Münchaurach held the market rights. In 1480 the city of Neustadt an der Aisch bought the Martinimarkt (the little profitable "cat market") from the monastery for 25 Heller .
architecture
The monastery church was built around 1130, the choir was rebuilt at the beginning of the 15th century in place of the earlier three apse, the tower and the transept vault were also rebuilt. A purifying restoration took place towards the end of the 19th century.
The exterior is carefully constructed using ashlar masonry. The choir is provided with stepped buttresses. The high, six-storey tower is built on the north transept, but is not connected to the wall. It has the same ashlar technology as the choir and is provided with sound openings with Gothic tracery.
A simple Romanesque west portal, the capital plates of which are provided with a checkerboard pattern, opens up the building. Inside the church is designed as a cross-shaped, flat-roofed basilica . The arcades stand on untapered columns with heavy cube capitals , the cover plates of which are also provided with a checkerboard pattern. The transept and the choir, the width of the nave with a three-eighth closure, are closed with ribbed vaults. The choir shows some of the original tracery windows .
In the west there is a one-bay west gallery built over a heavy ribbed cross vault from the 13th century.
Furnishing
The furnishings are neo-Gothic, with the exception of a crucifixion group, which was created at the end of the 16th / beginning of the 17th century. A fragmentary tombstone with a praying knight was probably made in the 13th century and shows an inscription in Uncials . Two coat of arms stones were also destroyed.
