St. Peter and Paul

St. Peter and Paul is a Roman Catholic parish church in Ratingen . In addition to the nave of the Essen minster, the Ratinger sacred building is one of the earliest hall churches in the Rhineland .

history

Floor plan before the expansion

The sacred building was created as a Romanesque church with two choir-side towers (mid-12th century) and a four-storey west tower (1st half of the 13th century). At the end of the 13th century, the Romanesque building was replaced by a three-aisled, five-bay hall church in the Gothic style . From 1892 to 1894 the church was expanded according to plans by the architect Heinrich Wiethase . A new, two-aisled transept in the neo-Gothic style was built at the height of the two eastern central nave bays by the two eastern choir flank towers . The Gothic nave was extended to the east by a yoke in the style of neo-Gothic and a hexagonal, neo-Gothic choir with a tent roof was added. The west tower received a pointed helmet.

During the Second World War the church was partially destroyed; the damage was removed step by step after the end of the war. In the 1970s, the facade was renovated and the interior renovated and redesigned according to the liturgical specifications of the Second Vatican Council . Further renovations followed from 1996 to 1998 after the east towers threatened to collapse and cracks appeared in the vaults.

organ

Today's organ was built in 1953 by the organ building workshop Romanus Seifert & Sohn (Kevelaer). In 1998 the organ was restored and its sound modified by the organ building company Westfälischer Orgelbau S. Sauer (Höxter). Among other things, an 8 'clarinet was installed. The “model” for this register is the clarinet in the organ of St. Mauritz Church (Münster) from 1882. In addition, the instrument was equipped with sub and super octave couplers.

In 2006 the instrument was again extensively restored by the builder company Romanus Seifert & Sohn . In the course of this, the organ was expanded to include a solo and a chamade work . The registers of the Chamadenwerk are - with the exception of the Cornet V - in a swell tower on the south side of the organ. The Cornet V, which belongs to the solo work, was placed on a bench in the main work. The registers of the Chamadenwerk were installed under the vault above the pedal parts. The wind turbine was supplemented by two more motors. Solo and Chamadenwerk can be freely coupled to all manuals and the pedal.

The cone store instrument today has 47 stops on three manuals and pedal . The actions are electronic. Ansgar Wallenhorst is cantor and organist at St. Peter and Paul .

Bells

In the tower hangs a large peal of eight bells , three of which are from the Middle Ages. The great Marienglocke , also called Merg or Märch , is praised as one of the most beautiful-sounding Gothic bells in the Rhineland, alongside the Cologne cathedral bells Pretiosa and Speciosa . The remaining bells were added in the post-war period, replacing three bells from 1926 that were destroyed in World War II.
