The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a Catholic church in Varnsdorf ( Warnsdorf ) in northern Bohemia , Czech Republic .

history

The baroque church of Saints Peter and Paul was built on the site of an earlier church, which is said to have been built in the 13th century and stood until 1740. That year a lightning strike had so destroyed the tower and the organ that the whole building threatened to collapse. After negotiations, the construction of the new church began in 1765 so that the old church was preserved inside. The foundation stone of the new church was laid on June 26, 1766, on the day of Peter and Paul . The construction was completed in 1777, which is also evidenced by the year in the coat of arms of the Liechtenstein family.

In 1829, as a result of a fire in the Bursa Hotel next to the church, the church also burned. The roof and tower collapse, the bells melted, the organ and the chandelier were destroyed. The church was quickly repaired by citizens from Varnsdorf, so that Beethoven's Missa solemnis could be premiered here in 1830 . In 1894 the parish church was elevated to a deanery church . The church clock also dates from this year. In 1904 the new, late romantic organ, built by organ master Hermann Eule from Bautzen , played in the church .

The church bells were replaced a few times because they were requisitioned for military purposes during wartime. The current five bells were brought from Bavaria on April 3, 1969 by the brothers Alfred and Erich Ludwig from Mering (near Augsburg) as a gift for the city of Varnsdorf. Bishop Štěpán Maria Trochta of Litoměřice consecrated the bells on April 20, 1969 after the Holy Mass with the participation of a large crowd in the market square.

Bells

The bells are called:

  • Peace, 2376 kg, mood H;
  • Maria, 1430 kg, mood D;
  • Georg, 1076 kg, mood E;
  • Ulrich, 769 kg, tuning C sharp;
  • Michael, 435 kg, mood A.

The year of the casting is written on the bells: 1948. The bells were cast from steel for the church in Mering after the war. Later new bells were cast from bell metal. A memorial plaque is attached to the side portal, commemorating the first performance of the Missa solemnis by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1830.
