St. Rochus und Sebastian , Rochus-Kapelle for short, is a Catholic chapel in Breidscheid in the Ahrweiler district . It is a listed building . Patrons of the chapel, which was probably donated as a plague chapel in the 17th century , are the two plague saints Rochus of Montpellier and Sebastian .

history

On January 6, 1157 Location is Breidscheid in an imperial charter of I. Friedrich Barbarossa with Gottfried von Breidscheid first mentioned. Due to the plague of 1628-29 the own chapel which was probably 1630 "Lords of Breidscheid" a stretched Verputzbau at the three-sided enclosed choir added. The choir with the eight-sided helmet is the oldest part of the chapel and probably dates from the early 13th century.

architecture

The single-nave chapel is 17.20 m long (the choir 4.42 m) and 4.50 m wide (choir 3.95 m). The continuously steep gable roof is crowned by a roof turret above the square floor plan with an eight-sided helmet. Two flat arched windows open on the long sides, a rectangular one at the end of the choir. The round arched door in the west is framed with pilasters and bears the date 1630. Inside the nave has a low flat ceiling, while the choir, which probably dates from the 13th century, is covered with a vault with a multi-part rib network.

Furnishing

On the east wall of the chapel there is a mission cross from 1638 made of basalt . It is 2.90 m high and the rectangular shaft is decorated with long late Gothic pointed arches. "CRUX SS. MISSIONIS" is written on the cross bar . There are six house brands (coats of arms) on the square, profiled base. A wayside shrine with Mary and the child can be seen above the west entrance . In earlier times there was a wooden figure of St. Matthias from the 17th century in a popular version.

The altar with its painted tuff stone attachment was made in stone carving around 1630. On it is the handkerchief of Christ, held by angels, above it between Ionic columns a figure of Our Lady on the crescent moon and in side niches the two Saints Sebastian and Rochus. The side cheeks are decorated with cartilage volutes and angel heads, the upper attachment is made of wood, crowned with a small crucifixion group.

In the chapel there are several paintings, including two wall paintings in the size 93 × 98 cm from the 17th century depicting Joachim and Anna, the child Mary in the temple and the death of St. Joseph show. An oval image of St. Aloysius in oil on canvas from the 1st half of the 17th century is 83 cm high, 70 cm wide and the Immaculate is shown on the back of the picture . The 17th century frescoed ceiling was exposed and restored during the 1978 renovation. In the choir there are two 1.05 m high baroque wooden figures of Saints Sebastian and Rochus. The figure of Rochus with a dog, holding bread in its mouth. At the entrance of the chapel there are two baroque stone figures, painted gray, 1.10 m high. On the right long side there is a 33 cm high wooden figure of Our Lady with Child from the 17th century on a base.

In the nave there are 20 pews from the 18th century, on one of the pews there is the carved inscription “JOHAN S ANNO 1738 SN, S. ZU. B. “(Schöffe zu Breidscheid). A communion bench was made as a journeyman's piece by Peter Baur from Breidscheid in the middle of the 20th century. The old confessional has been in Wimbach since 1978 .

At the west exit there is a two-door oak cupboard with the year 1740. The old vestments and missals are kept in it. Of the former two miss books, only one miss book from around 1900 is still available today. The Passion Cross, which was carried on pilgrimages, is preserved. The west door is made of oak and has iron fittings, a door knocker and a solid lock with a heavy key, all of which are probably the originals from 1630. In 1830 the chapel still had two chalices, including a silver chalice from 1634 and one Monstrance with relic. In 1831, the Rochus Chapel had assets of 230 Taler.

Bells

In the tower hang two bells from the early 18th century, 45 cm and 41 cm in diameter, with the inscriptions "S ROCHUS S. SEBASTIANUS HEICHEN ICH ANNO 1707" and "SANCTE DONATE ORA NOBIS ANNO 1764". The largest bell was dismantled for armaments during the Second World War and hung up again in the post-war years. However, the bell had become unusable due to a crack. A new bell was purchased on the initiative of Mayor Bell. For this purpose, a specialist company took an impression of the defective bell, which was then melted down and the material obtained was used again for the new casting. The citizens of Breidscheid raised the sum of DM 700 for this. The new bell was consecrated in 1952 and hung in the chapel tower in 1953.

Renovations

The chapel received a new roof through a donation from a Breidscheid citizen in 1966. In 1978 the chapel was stripped of plaster and refurbished. A new exterior and interior painting followed. Likewise, the figures, frescoes and pictures have been restored by specialists in the original colors. When a renovation was necessary again in 1995, the association “Heimatfreunde Breidscheid e. V. “u. a. the chapel fountain renovated, parts of the paving renewed and a lattice door attached to the wayside shrine above the entrance door.

Also by Heimatfreunde Breidscheid the chapel was last renovated to date in 2003 and 2004. Substantial donations from Breidscheid citizens and the use of their own contribution made the necessary renovation work possible in the entrance area of ​​the chapel. Plastering and painting work were carried out. The dilapidated weathercock of the church tower was made new by Breidscheider Hermann Prä Maßing, gilded and put back on the tower.
