history
The font from the 17th century is proof that there was a chapel in Stangenroth even before the great fire of 1738. Construction of today's parish church began in 1747. At that time, Stangenroth was still a branch of the parish of Burkardroth. In 1792 Burkardroth was separated and Stangenroth became an independent parish. In the years 1890/91 the high altar and the two side altars of the church were removed at the instigation of Pastor Weißenberger, who disliked the style of the original furnishings in the Rococo and Early Classicism, and replaced by simple altars by the Würzburg art carpenter Link. The high altar was erected on August 13, 1890, the two side altars the following year. The altarpiece Christ on the Cross , which is dated to the year 1797 and is by the painter Conrad Geiger, was transferred from the old high altar to the new one after it had previously been restored. The holy figures on the high altar represent Saint Sebastian , the namesake of the church, and Saint Wendelinus . According to legend, the latter is said to have ended a cattle disease in the village after the beginning of the 18th century when he asked a farmer to set up his wagon at the entrance to the village and align the drawbar to the Kreuzberg .
In 1899, under Pastor Kullmann, the nave was extended and a tower was added. In 1910 the church was extended laterally.
The access to the pulpit is walled up because Pastor Gloos, who worked in Stangenroth from 1933 to 1965, used to preach from the altar. In 1965, Pastor Grätz had the two side altars removed because of the installation of a new heater. In 1965 the Vasbühl artist Julian Walter built an altar table, an ambo and a priest's seat based on the Second Vatican Council .
Bells
The church had five bells until 1942. Since 1949 there have been four bells. Since 1975, the bells from 1949 were replaced in 1975/77, they sound with d ', f sharp', a 'and h' in the Salve-Regina motif.
