history

A chapel with the patrons Georg and Wenzel is mentioned for the first time in 1145 on the site of today's church . The chapel was expanded to a church and raised to a parish church . The church is referred to as St. New Year's Eve in the church visitation records from 1544–1545. The previous building was demolished in 1839 due to severe damage. The current church was built between 1840 and 1844 according to plans by Alfred Hindorf . He was the son of the pastor of Farnstädt at the time. The romanticizing style is based on the English Tudor Gothic . Hindorf found the inspiration for the construction of the church in this architectural style during a stay in Scotland.

Appearance

The church, embedded in the hilly landscape, is richly decorated on the outside, especially its crenellated tower. Inside the church - like many Protestant churches - is poor in decorative elements.

Support association

Since 2001, numerous citizens of Farnstädt have been involved in the Förderverein Kirche Unterfarnstädt eV for the preservation, restoration and use of the church.
