St. Stephan

The Catholic Church of St. Stephan in Untergruppenbach in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg was built in 1959/60.

history

A Catholic community in Untergruppenbach was only formed after the arrival of numerous Catholic refugees and displaced persons after the Second World War . The faithful initially attended the service in Talheim , after which the congregation became a branch of the Heilbronn Peter and Paul congregation . The first Catholic service in Untergruppenbach took place on August 18, 1946 in the adjoining room of the “Zur Rose” inn. In 1947 the mass was moved to the Protestant Johanneskirche . After the construction of the Michaelskirche had begun in Neckargartach , another branch of the Heilbronn parish, in 1958 , the call for its own church was also loud in Untergruppenbach.

In 1959, the Catholic community acquired an acre in the Kirchgrund area from the political community in the immediate vicinity of the new Untergruppenbach building area, which is predominantly inhabited by Catholics, as a building site for a new church. The Hungarian national saint Stephan was chosen as the church patron , since a large part of the community consisted of Hungarian displaced persons. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on August 8, 1959. According to plans by the Stuttgart architect Hans Georg Reuter , who also planned the church in Neckargartach, with the help of the parishioners, a modern church building was built by the end of 1960, which was stylistically integrated into the new housing estate structurally set an accent in the townscape. The church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Wilhelm Sedlmeier on 19/20. November 1960.

In 1974 a parish hall was added to the church . From 1978 the parish for Untergruppenbach, Abstatt and Ilsfeld with the respective districts was settled in Untergruppenbach . Since 2001 the parish has belonged to the pastoral care unit Lauffen-Talheim-Untergruppenbach (today: Neckar-Schozach) based in Lauffen am Neckar .
