The Catholic parish church of St. Vitus in Rettenbach am Auerberg on the eastern border of the Ostallgäu district is a baroque-style building from the late Gothic period with regotised furnishings (carpentry and sculpting).

The church founded by the Ottobeuren monastery is first mentioned around 1228 . A late Gothic new building took place in 1500 and on November 9th 1508 it was consecrated with 3 altars by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Heinrich von Adranyt. In 1650 the building was repaired after damage in the Thirty Years War and in 1685 it was expanded with new equipment.

The church tower was rebuilt in 1760. In the course of the restoration of 1870/71, the parish church lost all of its baroque furnishings and was refurbished with high-quality neo-Gothic sculptures and carpenters. Further restorations took place in 1929 and 1965.

The Vituskirche is divided into a three-bay nave (with a short gallery) and a two-bay, strongly recessed choir . The onion-crowned church tower is built on the north side of the first choir bay. On the outside of the nave there is an annex through which the pulpit access is led. The interior of the nave has a flat vault with stitch caps, and the choir has a late Gothic net rib vault with exposed early Renaissance paintings (around 1515 to 1517).

Furnishing

The stylish neo-Gothic altar furnishings come from Munich's Josef Beyrer and were made in 1876/81. In the high altar there is a high relief of the Holy Trinity , the assistant figures of Saints Ulrich and Afra are in canopy consoles . While the church year are before the altar relief from the Obergünzburger John Kaspar painted oil paintings Nativity , Jesus on the Mount of Olives , resurrection of Christ , the Good Shepherd , Christ crucified and key ceremony to Peter (the Nazarene ) alternately placed in front. The choir stalls on both sides of the choir are of high quality.

On the northern side altar, between the assistant figures, St. Leonhard and St. Magnus the altarpiece Maria Immakulata blesses the great tribal parents Adam and Eve , on the southern side altar between the assistant figures of St. Florian and St. Wendelin the altarpiece The Untying of St. Sebastian . Both paintings were painted by Johannes Kaspar as well as the pictures of the Stations of the Cross in artistic wooden frames.

The ceiling frescoes in the nave show in the main picture The Holy Trinity with Mary and Saint Vitus as intercessor over the town of Rettenbach , the small frescoes in the frame depict scenes from the legend of Vitus. These were painted in 1869 by Franz Osterried . The crucifix, with a Mater Dolorosa, opposite the pulpit (around 1880) dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century.

The neo-Gothic pews, the double gallery from 1786/87 with early classical frescoes, and a life-size dungeon Christ from the 3rd quarter of the 18th century in the sign are to be mentioned as further furnishings.

Tombstones

On the outside walls of the church are several gravestones for the Rettenbacher pastors Anton Hänle († 1760), Gebhard Imker († 1835), Joseph Schnöller († 1800) and Franz Sales Spiess († 1846) as well as a memorial plaque from Solnhofen Jura stone for the fallen from Recessed 1805–1815.
