Johannes Kaspar
Johannes Kaspar (born January 22, 1822 in Obergünzburg ; † October 23, 1885 there ; name also Johann Kaspar and Johann Baptist Kaspar ) was a German painter. Among other things, he created history paintings , often on a religious theme, and is counted among the Nazarenes .
Live and act
Johannes Kaspar was the son of a carpenter. At the age of 16 he studied at the Munich Art Academy as a pupil of Heinrich Maria von Hess and worked with her to furnish the church of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Boniface in Munich (the pictures were destroyed in the war in 1944).
Another work by Kaspar was the Stations of the Cross on the way to the Obergünzburg branch church of St. Nikolaus on the Nikolausberg , created between 1859 and 1863 . However, these only lasted almost 100 years because the mica-containing sand of the plaster layer destroyed the pictures (the twelfth station, created as a fresco painting in 1857 , was destroyed after two years and was removed). Around 1960, for example, the Kempten sculptor Karl Görlich created half-reliefs from Treuchtlingen marble for the station houses.
Works by him can also be found in the parish churches of Ronsberg , Willofs (high altar picture, 1879) and Ebersbach. The altarpieces in the choir of the parish church of the Assumption of Mary in Türkheim (today the Unterallgäu district ) as well as the high altarpiece of the Crucifixion in the parish church of St. Justina in Bad Wörishofen, created in 1868, come from him . Furthermore, Johann Kaspar rebuilt the side altars of the Church of St. James the Elder in Ketterschwang near Germaringen , renewed their altarpieces and redesigned the pulpit. For the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Zell near Bad Grönenbach (today the Unterallgäu district) he created the altar sheet of the main altar around 1840, the altar sheet of the St. Mary's altar in 1844 and the altar sheet of the Joseph altar in 1850. He created other altarpieces for churches in Elbing, Passau, Bayreuth, but also in Swabian places such as Dinkelscherben , Apfeltrach , Gundremmingen , Ketterschwang and Bidingen .
Kaspar was a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art . He died in 1885 and left the market town of Obergünzburg with numerous oil paintings, sketches and drawings. These are now exhibited together with works by other regional artists in the local history museum in the former parsonage, the foundation of which the estate provided the impetus.
