geography

Expansion of the former municipality (district Zell)

The hamlets listed here, including the parish village of Zell, are now part of the municipality of Bad Grönenbach.

topography

The parish village is located in Upper Swabia in the Danube-Iller region, about three kilometers north of Bad Grönenbach at an altitude of 651  m above sea level. NN . In a clockwise direction, starting in the north, Zell borders on its hamlets Koppenloh , Dießlings , Raupolz , Ölmühle and Hörpolz . The Zeller Bach , which rises near Sommersberg and flows into the Memminger Ach in Memmingen, flows through Zell from south to north .

geology

The main part of the village of Zell, more precisely the area west of the Allgäuer Straße and a strip to the east of it, is located on deposits from the Young Holocene and polygenetic valley filling from the Würm Ice Age . The subsoil consists of marl , clay , sand and gravel . The elevated terrace in the eastern area dates from the Rift Ice Age and consists of gravel, sand and partly conglomerate .

Geotopes

To the east of Zell, along the road from Zell to Raupolz and Schulerloch, as well as a little north of Zell, there is a high terrace from the Rift Ice Age. With the help of this geotope, Albrecht Penck demonstrated that the Pleistocene was multi-part. The valley floor is from the Worm Ice Age and is bounded by the high terrace of the Riss Ice Age. A terrace from the Mild Ice Age rises above it. The geotope has a length of 3100 meters and a width of 30 meters. The height is around 10 meters.

history

Finds from the Middle and Neolithic indicate a very early settlement of the area around Zell. Zell is mentioned for the first time in the chronicle of Kempten Abbey in 824. The Ottobeurer Abbot Isingrim donated relics to the parish church in 1167. In 1339 Friedrich von Rothenstein was the landlord of Zell. After the Lords of Teck held control of Zell until 1424, this passed to the Lords of Stein zu Stein and Ronsberg. Ludwig von Rothenstein acquired a large part of Zells in 1446. With the death of Ludwig von Rothenstein in 1482, Zell passed to Heinrich von Pappenheim. There was once a castle on the Buschel, which was mentioned in 1453 as the "old castle in the Zeller parish". However, nothing can be seen of it. In 1692/1695 the prince monastery of Kempten acquired the entire property of Zell. Zell including its hamlet was an independent municipality and was incorporated into Grönenbach on July 1, 1972 as part of the municipal reform .

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul

Neo-Gothic style church

Main article: St. Peter and Paul

A relic donation from Abbot Isingrim of Ottobeuren (1145–1180) in 1167 already indicates the existence of a church. In 1447, Bishop Johannes von Augsburg confirmed an indulgence granted to the parish church in Zell. A parish church in Zell was first mentioned in documents in 1477. The three altar leaves were painted by Johannes Kaspar in 1840–1850. The planning of the current church began in 1858 and the parish church of St. Peter and Paul was completed in 1865.

Archaeological finds

Settlement finds from the Mesolithic and the Neolithic were discovered on the southern outskirts of Zell .

Burgstall

Burgstall on the Buschel

Main article: Burgstall Im Buschel (Zell)

On the Buschel , west of Zell, the "old castle in the Zeller parish" was still called in 1453. In the meantime, however, nothing can be seen of the castle. Only soil formations can still be seen.
