The hamlet is located in Upper Swabia in the Danube-Iller region, about three kilometers southwest of Bad Grönenbach, at an altitude of 669  m above sea level. NN . Au is divided into different groups of houses and farmsteads. Directly on the Iller, the subsoil consists of deposits from the Young Holocene and a polygenetic valley filling, some of which originate from the Worm Ice Age. The ground in this area consists of marl , clay , sand , gravel and, in part, peat . The houses in the northern and southern area on the MN 21 district road a little east of the Iller are located on an area of ​​the undivided upper freshwater molasse of the Miocene . A mention of Au is documented as early as 1512. In the years 1811 to 1815, an angle school was built in Au, which was responsible for the school districts of Au, Schönau, Tiefenau, Manneberg and Brandholz. From 1815, the Royal Bavarian General Commissariat decided that there were only schools in Bad Grönenbach, Ittelsburg and Gmeinschwenden. In the Winkelschule in Au, the teacher Miller worked in 1813 and 1814, the teacher Buehl in 1814 and 1815, and finally the farmer's son Engelbert Klotz as the private teacher of his siblings.
