St. Willibrord (Merkstein)
The Catholic parish church of St. Willibrord is a listed church building in Merkstein , a district of Herzogenrath in the Aachen city region .
History and architecture
The cross-rib vaulted brick hall was built in 1746 with a three-sided east end . The west tower in front is crowned with a baroque dome , the basement floors made of quarry stone are from a previous building from the first half of the 13th century.
Furnishing
- The high altar , the communion bench and the pulpit from the middle of the 18th century are made of unmounted oak, the details are gilded.
- The confessionals were created around 1700.
- The organ work and case were built between 1842 and 1844.
- The two wooden standing figures are attributed to Gabriel de Grupello , who spent the last years of his life in the nearby Kasteel Erenstein . The figure of St. Willibrord was carved in the first half of the 18th century, that of Our Lady around 1720-1730. The version of both figures has not been preserved.
- In the churchyard around the church there are several grave crosses from the 17th and 18th centuries.
