Church of St. Wolfgang in Lengenwang

St. Wolfgang is the Catholic parish church in Lengenwang , a municipality in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu . The building is a listed building .

history

The first written mention of Lengenwang comes from the year 1386. In the early 16th century there was already a Wolfgang chapel , for which Georg von Hohenfreyberg founded a chaplain in 1503, probably as part of a renovation that was carried out at the time. However, Lengenwang was part of Seeg . In 1697 a separate clergyman was appointed to Lengenwang and in 1868 the parish became independent.

The church was given a new tower in 1610. A complete renovation was carried out in the 18th century; a design submitted by master bricklayer Benedikt Nigg from Füssen in 1775 was only implemented to a very limited extent during this renovation, which took place from 1776. In 1791 the tower was renewed again, and in 1872 the nave was painted.

Furnishing

The main figure of the high altar represents St. Wolfgang with the church model typical of this saint. He is flanked by St. Afra and St. New Year's Eve, above him is the image of St. Magnus.

On the left in the choir there are figures of St. Francis Xavier, St. Anna and St. Florian, on the right figures of St. John Nepomuk, St. Joachim and St. Sebastian.

The ceiling painting in the choir from 1776 shows the invocation of the most sacred altar sacrament by the four continents, the walls of the choir are adorned with invocations of Mary.

The side altars are in the nave. One shows St. Joseph with a picture of St. Michael, the other shows Mary with a picture of a little guardian angel.

Ceiling painting in the nave

The front ceiling painting shows Jesus as a childhood friend, the middle Maria in glory with the saints Wolfgang, Ulrich, Afra, Silvester and Antonius. In the round of the ship are pictures from the life of Wolfgang, the symbols of the evangelists as well as the pelican and phoenix, on the gallery pictures Christ and Magdalena, the transfiguration, the flight to Egypt and David and Cäcilia.

Above a votive picture with the inscription “Johann Unsinn beneficiat zu Lengenwang, after he was blown up by the Schwöden prisoners in Kempten through the Iller on a Fillen, he becomes engaged to S. Wolffgang, and escapes all mortal danger. Renovirt 1762. ”there is another representation of St. Wolfgang and an image of Mary. The votive picture is especially interesting because it contains a contemporary representation of the city of Kempten including the old Iller bridge.

One of the bells in the church tower bears the inscription “Ex dono Iosephi Bellmond et sororum 1776” and the foundry mark “Ioseph Arnold”. Other bells come from the years 1832, 1834 and 1876, two of which are from Anton Blettl in Augsburg .
