St David's Church is a disused church building within a circular churchyard at the junction of the A449 and A472 about one mile east of the town of Usk in Monmouthshire , Wales . The church was placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest by the Welsh government agency Cadw and is maintained by the Friends of Friendless Churches . Cadw has given the building a Grade I rating for its “exceptional interior” including the 15th century rood screen with a mezzanine and “rare pre- Victorian box chairs and furnishings” .

history

The church dates largely from the 15th century and was believed to have originally been dedicated to Saint Cyfyw. It was declared redundant in 1999. Friends of Friendless Churches , a nonprofit , signed a 999-year lease in 1999 , and improvements have been made to the outside of the church since then.

architecture

St David's is built from rubble stones and has a roof made of stone tiles. The floor plan consists of the nave to the chancel to the west is the entrance. On the eastern gable sits a finial , is on the western gable of the belfry. This has two triangular openings. The bells date from 1598 and 1688, but in 1999 only one of the two bells was left. On the south side, three perpendicular style windows let light into the interior of the church; there are no windows on the north side. The east-facing window has three openings. At the eastern end of the nave there is a buttress and on the south side of the chancel there is a Tudor arch .

According to Cawd, the church has a "remarkably unchanged interior with furnishings from the 18th century". The floor slopes down from the western entrance. The walls are plastered and painted with lime white. The pointed arch of the chancel is also plastered. The frame and front of the loft of the 15th century rood screen are still there. Box stalls from pre-Victorian times have been preserved. The pulpit is five-sided and a railing around the chancel is supported by turned balusters . There are stone benches on the east wall and a small but damaged piscina has been preserved in the south wall . The baptismal font is square and has a square base. Grave tablets are set into the floor of the nave and the chancel as well as the north wall.
