St Lucia is a place in the uMkhanyakude district , east of the administrative seat of Mtubatuba of the municipality of the same name in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa . The small town is a popular starting point for tourist tours in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park (formerly Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park ). In 2011 the city had 1,104 inhabitants.

St Lucia is located at the mouth of the lagoon of Lake St. Lucia on a narrow strip of land, bounded by the St. Lucia Estuary to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east. The place is about 240 km north of Durban . The streets are laid out in a checkerboard shape, the main street being Mackenzie Street , where most of the shops and tourism services are located. Numerous boat docks allow tour operators to make excursions to the St. Lucia lagoon and the sea on the Elephant Coast . Further inland is the village of Khula Village and in the south the settlement area of Mapelana (Maohelane) joins. The iSimangaliso Wetland Park extends from the village about 10 km further to the south and about 60 km to the north on the coast, which is strongly divided by wetlands, above all the lagoon of Lake St. Lucia, which extends from St Lucia extends about 30 km to the north. The park has the highest vegetated sand dunes in the world and the Cape Vidal Lighthouse ( ⊙ ) as a sight .
Numerous hiking routes such as the iGwalagwala Trail , Emoyeni Trail (63 km) and Mziki Trail (40 km) start in the village .
About 20 km south of the village is Cape St Lucia with the Cape St Lucia Lighthouse ( ⊙ ) in the area of KwaMbonambi .
history
St. Lucia was first named in 1554 as the Portuguese Rio dos Medos do Ouro ( Rio dos Médãos do Ouro , dt. River of the Golden Dunes) At that time survivors of the Portuguese ship São Bento landed there. At that time only the mouth of the Tugela River was named St. Lucia. Later, in 1575, the river got its current name. On December 13, 1575, the feast of Saint Lucia , Manuel Peresterello renamed the area to "Santa Lucia".
In 1822, St. Lucia was institutionalized by the British as a township. In 1895, the St. Lucia Game Reserve (hunting reserve) was founded 30 km north of the village .
