history

A Marienkirche in Haddingtoun is documented for the first time in 1139 . This was in the course of acts of war under Eduard III. destroyed in 1356. Construction of today's St Mary's Parish Church began a little later. In the 1380s it was partially completed, so that it could be used as a collegiate monastery . However, the construction of St Mary's Parish Church was not finally completed until late in the 15th century. In the Anglo-Scottish Wars , the church was badly damaged during the siege of Haddington in the 1540s. Two decades later, the bell tower and the west wing were made usable again and served as a parish church for over 400 years . The church was extensively redesigned in 1811. However, this measure did not include the east wing, which remained in ruins. This was not restored until the 1970s.
