St Peter's Cricket Club

The St Peter's Cricket Club is a cricket team from the Vatican . The home pitch is the Capannelle Cricket Ground in Rome . The jerseys are light blue or white with the coat of arms of the Holy See .

history

The cricket club was founded in September 2013 and was part of a culture and sports program of the Vatican. It was initiated by John McCarthy, the then Ambassador of Australia to the Vatican. The club was presented to the press for the first time on October 22, 2013. The newly founded sports teams are supposed to spread the Christian religion on the one hand and to get in contact with other religions through sport on the other. In order to establish Christianity in Asia, the cricket team was formed. Therefore, the team consists mainly of Indian , Pakistani and Sri Lankan players, since cricket is a national sport in these countries. The first training session of the season took place on March 15, 2014.

2014 season

The first official T20 match of the season, the opening match, took place on April 7, 2014. The Vatican cricket team played against a selection of players from England. The venue was the Capannelle Cricket Ground of the Capannelle Cricket Club in Rome . A Pakistani priest candidate from St. Peter's XI was the highest scorer with 42 runs .

Light of Faith Tour

The Light of Faith Tour took place in England from September 12th to 20th, 2014 and was the first foreign tour of the Vatican cricket team. The tour consisted of a series of charity games to raise awareness of human trafficking and raise funds. Furthermore, they wanted to enter into dialogue with representatives of the English Church with the help of sport . The tour consisted of a few preparatory games and culminated in the match between St Peter's Cricket Club and the Anglican XI . St Mary's University served as accommodation for the first 6 days before the crew traveled on to Canterbury. The team consisted of two priests , four deacons and seven candidates for priests. 10 days before the start of the tour, the participants had a private audience with Pope Francis . The British priest and batsman father Tony Currer was chosen as the team captain.

The second match of the tour took place at Preston Park in Brighton . To distinguish the team names, the place names were also given. The fourth match of the tour took place in Windsor near Windsor Castle . The delegation from the Vatican played against staff from Windsor Castle. The Royal Household Cricket Clubs Ground in the private Home Park was the venue. The tour finale took place on September 19, 2014 at the St Lawrence Ground, home of the Kent Cricket Club , near Canterbury Cathedral .

More tours

The team has been touring irregularly since then. In October 2015, the team traveled to England again to compete against an all-Muslim selection from Yorkshire , as well as to hold another encounter against The Royal Household XI . The Archbishop of Canterbury's team also made a return visit to Rome, which St Peter's Club won with 43 runs .

On the tour in September 2016, the club will play a total of four games, with the Anglican XI and the Muslim team from Yorkshire playing against a southern English representation from Hindu, Muslim, Sikhist and Buddhist communities. Games were played in the two test stadiums, Headingley and Edgbaston , and a reception was organized by the English Association .
