State wine-growing domain Trier

The State Weinbaudomäne Trier also - State domain Avelsbach called - is owned by the Land Rheinland-Pfalz located Weinbaudomäne .

history

The viticulture domain was founded in 1896 on the initiative of the agricultural scientist Hugo Thiel (1839–1918) by the Prussian state as a model company to promote modern and rational methods of viticulture and to research plant protection methods . First, vineyards were planted in Ockfen , from 1901 there were additional sites in Trier ( Aveler Valley , completed in 1911; the areas were previously used as Lohwald) and Serrig (completed in 1938).

In 1902 a large cellar was built in Trier in the area of Sichelstrasse , in which over 1,000 loads of wine could be stored on 5,475 square meters . In autumn 2011, a newly built wine cellar was put into operation next to the winery building.

In 1977 there was a merger with the Landes-Lehr- und Versuchsanstalt (LLVA). Since the cultivation area of these two farms with 88 hectares far exceeded the need for research and training purposes, the sites in Serrig and Ockfen were privatized .

Renovation work has been taking place since 1990.

Today the domain encompasses 31 hectares in the Avelsbacher Hammerstein and Avelsbacher Rotlei sites (both exclusively owned) as well as Trier St. Maximiner Kreuzberg , Trier Deutschherrenberg and Trier Deutschherrenköpfchen . 70 percent of these are steep slopes . It is predominantly Riesling grown (82 percent of the area), on 5% Burgundy and regent grapes ; also Elbling , Chardonnay or Traminer . Some of the wines are also processed into sparkling wine . A stylized eagle has been depicted on the labels of the wines since the 1930s . The domain will switch to organic viticulture from 2014. The first organic wine is expected to be sold from 2017.

Since 2015 there has been a peace stele on the site with the inscription RECEIVE PEACE and GEDENKET BEDENKET , which was built by the former students of the State Teaching and Research Institute for Viticulture, Agriculture, Housekeeping and Horticulture in Trier.

Since 2016, the buildings as well as the vineyards and the cellar technology of the Avelsbach domain have been leased to the DRK Sozialwerk (headquarters: Bernkastel-Kues) after the state of Rhineland-Palatinate withdrew from its original plans to sell.

The DRK Sozialwerk also produces wines from the Nikolaus-Hospital and Cusanus-Hofgut wineries in the Avelsbach domain and offers products from various cooperating regional food producers.

The domain road (Trier) is named after her.

architecture

The domain is an assembly of wine press house, bottling and storage buildings and residential building. The complex is divided into buildings of different heights including a tower, which are designed with plastered surfaces, exposed brick and ornamental framework as well as different roof surfaces with hips and dormer windows. This gives the building a castle-like character. The surrounding vineyards were originally opened up with a field railway, the tracks of which led directly to the top floor of the wine press house. From there the grapes were processed on the way to the ground floor. The building is an important monument of economic and wine-growing history.

A separate housing estate was built for the domain workers on the height of today's Baltzstraße. This is a typical workers' settlement with a village character. It was built from nine two-family houses along the Baltzstraße in an open field on a plateau of the Grüneberg above the state wine-growing domain Avelsbach in the period from 1908 to 1910 in the style of a village. Each house had a garden and three acres of arable land that could be used for agricultural purposes. Homes and land were leased to workers in the viticulture domain . The aim was to bind a solid core of employees to the company who, in contrast to the up to 250 seasonal workers, were constantly available.

The so-called Thiels Castle is located above the vineyards in a north-westerly direction .
