Hugo Thiel
Hugo Thiel (born June 2, 1839 in Bonn , † January 13, 1918 in Berlin ) was Ministerial Director in the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture, Domains and Forests and, together with Wilhelm Rimpau , played a key role in the development of German seed breeding.
He was chairman of the royal commission for the division of the Dahlem domain and in this role played a key role in the conversion of the agricultural property into a villa colony (since 1901) and the use of the south-eastern Dahlem area as a science location (around 1910).
Life
Thiel studied agricultural science in Poppelsdorf (then a suburb of Bonn) and received his doctorate in 1865. phil. In 1866 he taught as a private lecturer in Poppelsdorf. From 1869 to 1872 Thiel was a full professor of agricultural science in Darmstadt and from 1872 to 1873 in Munich. From 1873 to 1885 he was general secretary in the Prussian State Economics College. In 1879 Thiel joined the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture as a secret councilor . Most recently he was Real Privy Councilor and Ministerial Director there. In 1880 and 1881 he played a key role in the preparations for the conversion of the agricultural teaching institute and museum into the Agricultural University in Berlin, and from 1880 to 1910 on the board of trustees of the university.
Thiel and Rimpau were in close scientific and private contact for 40 years.
He was a member of the Frankfurt-Leipzig fraternity Arminia .
Thiel was from 1874 to 1877 a member of the Reichstag for the constituency of Magdeburg 2 administrative district . There he belonged to the National Liberals. At the same time, as a national liberal for the same constituency, he was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1873 to 1878. From 1901 to 1911 he was chairman of the commission for the division of the Dahlem domain and in this function played an essential role in shaping Berlin-Dahlem .
Honors
A bust of Thiel is in the foyer of the Agricultural and Horticultural Faculty of the Humboldt University on Invalidenstrasse in Berlin-Mitte . Thielallee, Thielpark and the Thielplatz underground station in Berlin-Dahlem , renamed Freie Universität Berlin (Thielplatz) since December 2016 , are named after him, as is Thielstraße in Bonn .
The likeness of Hugo Thiel was also attached to the domain castle in the form of a cast relief at the Avelsbach wine-growing domain near Trier .
