The State Qastejew Museum of Arts ( Kazakh Мемлекеттік Ә Қастеев атындағы өнер мұражайы. , Russian . Государственного музея искусств им А. Кастеева ) is an art museum in the Kazakh city of Almaty . The museum, founded in 1979, is named after the Kazakh painter Äbilchan Qastejew . With around 22,000 art objects, it is one of the largest art museums in Central Asia .

The museum is located in the southwest of Almaty city center. Around 22,000 different works of art are on display over three floors. The collection includes exhibits from Kazakhstan , Russia , Europe and Asia . The collection of Russian art from the 17th to 20th centuries includes 1,200 paintings, sculptures and other items.

The art objects include works by well-known artists such as Kuzma Sergejewitsch Petrow-Vodkin , Pawel Nikolajewitsch Filonow , Aristarch Wassiljewitsch Lentulow or Pavel Dmitrijewitsch Korin .

Today's Kasteev State Museum of Arts opened on September 16, 1976 based on the collection of the Kazakh Art Gallery, named after Taras Shevchenko , and the Republican Museum of Applied Arts. In the 1930s, some paintings from the Tretyakov Gallery , the Pushkin Museum, and the Hermitage of Saint Petersburg were transferred to the museum's collection. In 1936, for example, the museum received a painting by the Russian painter Olga Vladimirovna Rosanova .

In 1982, the museum building was added to the list of historical and cultural monuments of national importance in Kazakhstan. In January 1984 the museum was renamed in honor of the Kazakh painter Abilchan Kastejew.
