Äbilchan Qastejew ( Kazakh Әбілхан Қастеев , Russian Абылхан Кастеев Abylchan Kastejew ; born January 1, jul. / 14. January  1904 greg. In the village ski Schin , Oblast Semiretschje, Russian Empire ; † 2. November 1973 in Alma-Ata , Kazakh SSR ) was a Kazakh- Soviet painter .

Life

Qasteyev was born in 1904 in a village near Jarkent in the Semirechye Oblast in the Russian Empire . His father was a rancher, his mother wove carpets at home. He lost his father at the age of three. To support his mother and younger siblings, Qasteyev started working early. When the family moved to Jarkent, he got a job building the Turkestan-Siberian Railway .

In 1929 he moved to Alma-Ata, where he met Nikolai Gavrilowitsch Chludow and was taught in his art studio. Between 1934 and 1936 he lived in Moscow . There he studied at the folk art studio. In order to be able to finance his life there, he sold several of his works to the Museum of Oriental Art . In 1937 he was accepted into the Union of Artists of the USSR. From the mid-1930s, Qasteyev's best-known works were created, which mainly show scenes from the everyday life of the Kazakh people. He also portrayed great Kazakh personalities such as Amangeldy Imanow , Abai Qunanbajuly or Schoqan Uälichanuly and also dedicated his works to the history of the Kazakh people. His watercolors of Kazakh landscapes also became famous.

In 1942 his first exhibition took place in Alma-Ata ; he was also awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Kazakh SSR. Two years later he was also awarded the honorary title of People's Artist of the Kazakh SSR. Between 1945 and 1956 he was chairman of the Union of Artists of the Kazakh SSR. In 1967 he was awarded the State Prize of the Kazakh SSR for a series of watercolors entitled In the Land of Kazakhstan. In addition to his artistic activities, he was twice a member of the Supreme Soviet of the Kazakh SSR in the 1950s.

He died on November 2, 1973 in Alma-Ata
