Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin ( Russian Кузьма Сергеевич Петров-Водкин , scientific. Transliteration Kuz'ma Sergeevič Petrov-Vodkin ; born October 24, jul. / 5. November  1878 greg. In Khvalynsk ; † 15. February 1939 in Leningrad ) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, art theorist, writer and educator.

biography

Petrov-Vodkin was born in 1878 in the city of Chwalynsk (now Saratov Oblast ) in the family of a shoemaker. At the end of the 1890s he studied painting and drawing in Samara and at the Central School for Technical Drawing in Saint Petersburg . In 1901 he continued his studies in Munich with Anton Ažbe . He later moved to Moscow , where he studied with Valentin Serov at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. In 1905 he finished his studies in Moscow and went to Paris to continue studying in private schools. He also visited Italy and North Africa . In 1911 he became a member of the World of Art Association (Мир искусства) and in 1924 of the Four Arts Group (Четыре искусства) . During the Soviet Union , Petrow-Wodkin worked a lot as a graphic artist and playwright. He wrote stories and plays as well as theoretical essays. From 1918 to 1933 he taught in the Free State Art Education Ateliers (Государственные свободные художественные учебные мастерские) in Leningrad. From 1932 to 1937 he was the first president of the Saint Petersburg Artists Association .
