The Stade Tata-Raphaël ( German Father Raphael Stadium ) is a football stadium in the Kalamu district of Kinshasa , the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . When it opened in 1952, it was named Stade Roi Baudouin (after the Belgian King Baudouin ) and from 1967 Stade du 20 May (after the founding date of Mobutu's MPR 1967). With the fall of the regime of Mobutu Sese Seko in 1997, the stadium was renamed “Stade Tata Raphaël” after the Belgian missionary and founder of important Congolese sports institutions, Raphaël de la Kethulle de Ryhove , called Tata Raphaël .
It is mainly used for soccer games and offers 30,000 seats.
Events
The most famous event, which was held at the stadium was the Rumble in the Jungle , a boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman over the world title of the WBC / WBA in heavy weight on 30 October 1974. Six weeks before the boxing match was the music festival Zaire 74 with artists like James Brown and BB King .
The system was also the background for the documentary about the Congolese boxer Victoire Terminus .
The final of the CAF Champions League 2014 (first leg) with the AS Vita Club from Kinshasa took place in the stadium.
