The stadium Karađorđev park ( Serbian - Cyrillic Стадион Карађорђев парк ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility and home of the FK Banat Zrenjanin and FK Proleter Zrenjanin , two Serbian football clubs from Zrenjanin , with a total capacity of around 13,500.

history

Football games have been played on the ground of the stadium and its surroundings since the 1910s. At the beginning of the 1930s, the seat of AK Obilić was located there , which had previously had a playing field and a wooden and covered western grandstand built. In 1926, another football club, FK Borac Zrenjanin, established its Spielefled in the immediate vicinity . With the establishment of FK Proleter Zrenjanin in 1947, everything should change, because a stadium should be built for the new football club as soon as possible.

The construction of today's venue began in 1948 with the erection of the stands in the north, south and east on the club grounds of the dissolved AK Obilić . Five years later, a wooden grandstand followed in the west with 3,000 seats. It was named after Karađorđe park , a park where the stadium is located, this is again after the leader of the First Serbian Uprising (1804-1813) against the Ottoman occupation of the country and the founder of the Karadjordjevic dynasty, Djordje Petrovic , called Karađorđe. The property was opened on May 5, 1953.

In 1968 the old grandstands were replaced by concrete structures after a fire . It offered space for 2,000 spectators. A year earlier, on October 22, 1967, a game of the 1st Yugoslav soccer league between Proleter Zrenjanin and Red Star Belgrade (2-0) gathered 22,000 spectators in the stadium. This is a record number of visitors to this day. In the following years the remaining grandstands were renovated.

The facility was renovated in 2006 and the west and east stands were fitted with red plastic seats. The main stand was also equipped with VIP - boxes equipped and a press box.

International matches

The stadium has also hosted games by the Serbian U-21 men's national soccer team against Bulgaria (1: 2), Malta (1: 0), Sweden (2: 0) and England (1: 0).
