The Schorndorf City Library is the public library of the city of Schorndorf .

history

The Schorndorf City Library was founded in 1949. In autumn of this year, a room was created in the building of the former Latin school on Kirchplatz by converting a wooden stable. After the city administration lacked the financial means to buy the books, the Schorndorfer Nachrichten was initially less successful - hardly three dozen volumes were received on the first day of acceptance - appeal to the population:

"Our heartfelt request is that every citizen who is still allowed to call a large number of books his own donates some to the creation of the first foundation of the public library, insofar as, after careful and conscientious consideration, he believes he can do without them and thus serve his fellow citizens. "

The city library opened for the first time on December 21, 1949. Children under the age of 14 were initially not allowed to borrow. The local population also used the rooms as a warming room , as noted in a local council report . In November 1953, the library moved into a room in the community center built with financial support from the USA at Augustenstrasse 4, where it is still located today. In 1958, loan fees of 20 pfennigs for adults and 10 pfennigs per title for young people were introduced, which caused a decline in lending.

In the 1960s the city library was expanded to include a second room. The counter library, in which the librarian accepted the borrower's requests at a counter, became an open- access library in which the readers themselves had access to the bookshelves.

In the spring of 1980 the premises were expanded and redesigned again. After the day care center moved out in 1986, the city library was rebuilt and the south wing with a reading terrace was added. In 2000, the facility was made barrier-free by adding a staircase with a passenger lift .

The city is currently looking for a new, more spacious location for its library, with the Alte Meierei building in Archivstrasse being examined at the moment (2017).

Schorndorf "library scandal"

The library made nationwide headlines in 1981. Mayor Rudolf Bayler feared a left-leaning inventory build-up with the library manager at the time , after he presented books at an event at the adult education center that was classified as “left of center” . As a result, he was supposed to submit his book orders to the town hall for approval. In view of this censorship and the restriction of his professional freedom of choice, the librarian resigned. A subsequent applicant was asked about his political orientation during the interview; He also learned that in the future four women - often referred to as the “literary ladies' quartet” in the following discussion - would view the orders and help determine the “broad line” of new acquisitions. The waves were high; through the interference of the professional library association, the case became public throughout Germany.

The Schorndorf public library today offers around 50,000 media (as of December 31, 2019), including books , CDs , DVDs , video games and e-media. It provides current daily newspapers and around 60 magazine titles. In 2019 she achieved a good 220,000 loans.
