Citizenship (representative body)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Citizenship is the name of the city council in Hanseatic cities . A citizenship is thus a parliament made up of elected city representatives.

In the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen , the citizenship also represents the state parliament of these city-states . There it corresponds to the state parliament in other federal states (or the House of Representatives in Berlin ).

While the Hamburg citizenship is also entrusted with municipal political tasks, this applies to the Bremen citizenship only for the members of the city of Bremen who form the city citizenship.

The citizens of the Free and Hanseatic City of Lübeck lost their status as state parliament through the Greater Hamburg Law in 1937. In 1945/46 it was reconstituted as a municipal parliament.

The name Bürgerschaft is used to denote the city council in the following Hanseatic cities:

The city council of the

  • City of Bremen
  • historical: City of Gdansk within the Free City of Danzig (elected by the Gdansk People's Day from among its members to pass resolutions on matters relating to the City of Gdansk)

Chairman

The designation and also the functions of the chairman of the citizenship differ from country to country or in the individual cities.

The chairman in the states of Hamburg and Bremen as well as in the Hanseatic city of Rostock is referred to as the president of the citizenship and in the Schleswig-Holstein Hanseatic city of Lübeck he is called the city president .

In their first meeting after the new election, the citizenship usually elects a chairman and any deputies or other supporting bodies for the current electoral period from among their number.

The possible tasks of a president may include convening and leading meetings of the citizenship or setting the agenda. The chairman or his deputy often has extensive representational duties alongside the mayor.
