City Church of St. Barbara

The Stadtkirche St. Barbara is a listed church in the southern Brandenburg town of Ortrand in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district . It is entered in the register of monuments in Brandenburg under No. 09120216.

history

The church was founded in 1563 when the St. James church was in need of major repairs. It originated from the former Barbara chapel. The chapel was mentioned as Capella Barbarae in the Meißner diocese register as early as 1346 .

Benjamin Schimmer from Königsbrück carried out the renovation from 1563 to 1565. The tower on the north side of the church was built on the former sacristy . The church was completely destroyed in the town fire in 1612. The reconstruction lasted until 1627, the outbreak of the Thirty Years War contributed to the delay in construction. In the meantime the Jakobskirche was used as a church. On August 12, 1627, the Barbara Church was consecrated again. When the town burned again on April 19, 1707, the church stopped, but suffered damage. All surrounding buildings were destroyed. Due to the fire damage, the church was renovated and rebuilt from 1728 to 1732. During this renovation under the main direction of George Bähr , who also built the Dresden Frauenkirche and the Georgskirche in nearby Großkmehlen , the damaged tower above the sacristy was torn down. Instead, Bähr erected a roof turret with a hood and lantern and tower knob over the chancel. The total cost of the renovation was 1686 thalers. Further repairs were made in 1772, 1821, 1872, 1895 and 1928. During the First World War , the bronze bells were melted down, and in 1920 they were replaced by three steel bells. In 1934 the council gallery was demolished. Furthermore, the special stands were removed and the side galleries rebuilt. In the 1960s, the altar wall was dismantled and a new pulpit was installed. From 1983 to 1984 the tower and exterior plaster were repaired again. On November 17, 1984, the gilded tower button with star was put on in a ceremony.

organ

The existing instrument comes from Arno Voigt , organ building company from Bad Liebenwerda . It was the company's first major order in 1918 as it focused on furniture manufacturing during the war.
