City church in Stavenhagen

The town church in Stavenhagen in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was built in 1782. It belongs to the parish of Stavenhagen in the Propstei Neustrelitz, Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

The church

The city church of Stavenhagen was built in the 18th century. It is not known whether there was a church or a chapel in the old castle of the city until the Reformation. However, there is evidence of an older church from the 13th century and an extension to the old tower in 1601. Up until the Reformation there was a castle priest in the city.

The predecessor of today's church was a half-timbered building. The old church was badly damaged several times during the Thirty Years' War. Despite numerous renovations and renovations, the condition of the building was unsatisfactory, so it was decided to build a new church.

It took an entire century before the financial means for a new building were available. In 1774 the half-timbered church was demolished and on July 16, 1774 the foundation stone was laid for the current church. In 1782 the church consecration took place under Pastor Knöchel. The church tower was not completed until 1790. There are two bells in it.

The tower clock was given a new movement in 1996.

inner space

The church is laid out in the shape of a cross and closed with a flat ceiling. The altarpiece shows "The Resurrection of Christ". It comes from Johann Hinrich Suhrland from Ludwigslust and is a gift from Grand Duke Friedrich Franz I for the consecration of the church.

The pulpit comes from the previous church. Built in the Renaissance style, it shows the four evangelists. The upper one of the originally two galleries was removed in 1970/71 during renovation work. In 1978, during further work on the lower gallery, the pictures of John the Baptist, Jesus Christ and the apostles were uncovered. A chalice-shaped baptismal font and a baptismal angel restored in 2015 come from the time it was built.

In the entrance area of the church there is a Marian altar from the 14th / 15th Century to visit. Unfortunately, it is in poor condition. The organ (eleven registers , a manual and pedal ) was built in 1861 by Friedrich Hermann Lütkemüller . The organ prospectus was built in 1780 by the organ builder Paul Schmidt from Rostock. The tin prospect pipes were confiscated by the army administration during the First World War, and later replaced by zinc pipes. In 2009 and 2011 a technical restoration and reconstruction was carried out by Andreas Arnold (Plau am See).

Renewals

Between 2007 and 2013 the organ was completely renovated and restored in several construction phases. In 1912 an electrical lighting system was installed. The chandelier, which hangs in front of the column and was converted back from an electric chandelier to a candlestick in 2007, also dates from this time. The font dates from around 1900. In 1959, a footplate heating was installed. However, this only worked for a few years. In 2007, new seat heating was therefore installed. In 2013 and 2014, the church roof was completely renovated.
