The Kirchenlamitz city pond is a 0.9 hectare, artificially created reservoir in the city of Kirchenlamitz in the district of Wunsiedel in the Fichtelgebirge (northeast Bavaria). The pond, which is a protected natural monument, is fed by the river Lamitz .
history
The year of origin of the Kirchenlamitz city pond was the year 1504. The Landshut War of Succession , which went down in history as the “Bavarian Unfried” , had been carried out to the Fichtelgebirgsorte and Margrave Friedrich II (ruled from 1486 to 1515) ordered appropriate precautionary measures. The Kirchenlamitzer had to dig trenches along the town center, which were flooded when the enemy threatens. The ditches were flooded from a slightly elevated pond at the western end of the village. The city pond was created through enormous earthworks on the Obere Anger and the canalisation of the Lamitzbach. In 1750, the then market Kirchenlamitz acquired the extinguishing water pond together with the Obere Anger by buying it from the property of the margravial administration.
use
The pond was initially used for local defense, later for fish farming , ice extraction and provided fire fighting water .
tourism
In 1904, the Kirchenlamitz embellishment association recognized the use of the pond for tourism, when a small island was created and a boat operation was set up. The entire bank was planted with trees and an approximately 350-meter-long bank path was laid out. In winter, the city pond is suitable for ice stock sport and ice skating . The neighboring city park offers recreational opportunities.
