City traffic Regensburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are around 70 bus routes in and around Regensburg, some of them with mainly inner-city tasks. At the beginning of the 1980s, following the founding of the Regensburger Verkehrsverbund (RVV), work began on eliminating the uncoordinated planning and tariff setting between city and regional traffic and creating an integrated network area.

background

In 1903 the tram network was put into operation, which in its maximum extent had four lines. The small railcars of the Regensburg tram even drove over the medieval stone bridge . Because of its poor condition and the alignment of the road, it became more and more of a traffic obstacle and was gradually shut down until 1964. Since then, public transport in Regensburg has largely been carried out with buses .

As an alternative to the tram, the Regensburg trolleybus was introduced in the 1950s . A line from the main train station to Danziger Freiheit was built and operated for ten years. This meant that there were temporarily three branches of operation in Regensburg: trams, trolleybuses and diesel buses. It is noteworthy that the tram line 1 fromChecking to Pürkelgut outlived the much younger trolleybus. Individual masts for the former trolleybus catenary are still in the Maximilianstrasse area and in the course of the bus turning loop opposite the main station.

At the beginning of the 1980s, a spur bus tunnel was planned in the old town between the main train station and Arnulfsplatz . However, for fear of damage to the historical building fabric, the project was not pursued any further.

Since the traffic density and the associated problems have continued to grow in recent years, the introduction of a modern light rail in north-south direction is currently planned, for which some structural preparations have already been made. For example, the Nibelungen Bridge and the Iron Bridge are already designed accordingly to be able to carry a tram route. Wherever possible, space was provided for a separate route in other places as well, e.g. B. in the new development area Burgweinting .

railroad

At the main station , which is on the Nuremberg - Regensburg - Passau railway line , there are three more regional routes. These are: Regensburg - Landshut - Munich , Regensburg - Weiden (- Hof) and Regensburg - Ingolstadt (- Ulm) .

In 1991, a tariff cooperation was established between RVV and Deutsche Bundesbahn, which meant that rail routes in the Regensburg district were also integrated into the transport network for the first time. This cooperation was gradually extended to other sections of the route in the Upper Palatinate. The RVV tickets are also valid within the transport association on all regional trains of Deutsche Bahn AG, the Länderbahn and Agilis . In addition to the main train station in the city center, Regensburg has two additional access points for regional trains, with the Prüfing station in the west and since the end of 2006 in Burgweinting in the south-east. You can change to city bus routes at both. The reactivation of the Regensburg-Walhallastraße train station in the northeast near the business park is currently planned. Here, too, there should be a transfer point to the bus service.

Companies

Most of the traffic in the urban area is provided by the Regensburger Verkehrsbetriebe (RVB) , but some lines are also assigned to private bus companies. The depot is located in the south of the city in an industrial area at the "Schwabenstrasse" stop, which leads to a not inconsiderable number of departures and arrivals. There is an old tram (first aid vehicle ) as a memorial , but it is not open to the public. This train was used in Darmstadt until 1990.

Tickets can be purchased from machines and in the customer center in advance and from the bus driver. Single tickets are only issued on the bus at an additional cost. Some kiosks and stationery shops also sell tickets and thus expand the options for advance booking. The RVV customer center is located east of the Hauptbahnhof (main station) stop. All tickets, monthly and annual tickets and timetable information are available here.

Lines

The operator of the city bus is the Regensburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH .

The central transfer point of almost all city lines is the junction in Albertstraße at the main train station, which was built in the second half of the 1990s. The combination of all lines in this street parallel to Bahnhofplatz has significantly improved the transfer situation. A hunt group from almost and in almost all main directions takes place every half hour, especially during off-peak times.

In the course of the 1990s, the route network was slightly redesigned and supplemented several times, but always retained its basic concept of diameter and radial lines converging at the station. This strong centralization also represents one of the major weak points, because almost all connections lead via the train station and the old town.

Tangential connections between neighboring districts are only fragmentary (line 4 in the southwest and line 11 in the southeast), which means that travel times are considerably longer. Due to the very heavy individual traffic and the often narrow spatial layout of the street, the old town area can only be driven at low speed.

The high degree of urban sprawl in the Regensburg area makes it difficult to connect it via the existing railway lines and the frequent intervals of bus routes, so that many commuters use the car as a means of transport. Even in the city area on the main axes, after the evening rush hour from 7 p.m., all bus routes only run every half hour.

During the day, the basic cycle on the city lines is the 20-minute cycle. On important routes, the sequence of wagons is compressed to ten minutes all day Monday through Friday, and on some other sections also during rush hour. On regional bus routes, there is only partially a fixed cycle, but here too there is a trend towards regular departure times on high-demand routes.

As of February 2020, the following lines operate:

Old town bus

In the 1990s, in the general trend of inner-city traffic calming measures, the idea arose to remove all lines with standard and articulated buses from the historic city center and to replace them with a circular line in the old town served by small or midibuses.

On May 25, 1998, the so-called old town bus route "A" began operating in Regensburg under the motto "Newly experienced old town". The midibuses of the type Neoplan N 4007 CNG with natural gas drive, which were used especially for this line , had 16 seats and 36 standing places. Initially the old town bus route ran on the route "Maximilianstraße - Am Königshof - Königsstraße - Domplatz - Altes Rathaus - Gesandersstraße - Neupfarrplatz - Domplatz - Königsstraße - Am Königshof - Hauptbahnhof" from Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. and on Saturdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. every five minutes.

Due to the new routes, the sequence of squares "Kohlenmarkt - Rathausplatz - Haidplatz" has been bus-free and Maximilianstrasse and Domplatz are no longer directly connected to Arnulfsplatz, which is why many Regensburg residents complained about the introduction of the old town bus. In the beginning, longer walks and increased transfers between bus routes were also criticized.

The response was to extend the route and operate the stops at Haidplatz, Arnulfsplatz, Bismarckplatz and Gutenbergstrasse. Due to the resulting longer travel time, another midibus was procured for the old town bus in November 1999. It was a Mercedes-Benz O 520 "Cito" with diesel-electric drive, which was equipped with eleven seats.

In the course of time, the cycle times were extended due to economic reasons. In 2001 another bus of the "Cito" type was procured from Mercedes-Benz in order to be able to handle all bus traffic with minibuses. For the opening of the "Regensburg Arcaden" in 2002, the route over the Galgenberg Bridge to the new shopping center was extended to a new terminus called "Friedenstraße".

However, since the minibuses used often had to struggle with technical difficulties, did not offer enough space in shopping traffic and were increasingly criticized for many complaints about driving comfort and, last but not least, questionable economy, standard buses now run every ten minutes. The existing midibuses were then all sold by the beginning of 2007.

Since July 28, 2008 there has been a new route with a new timetable for the old town bus route. Since then, the line has started again at the main train station and the "Galgenberg Brücke" and "Friedenstraße" stops near the "Regensburg Arcaden" are no longer operated. In addition, Saturday traffic on the old town bus line was completely discontinued. The bus line runs from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to around 6:30 p.m. every 10 minutes, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. a bus from line A runs every 15 minutes. In the course of general cost-saving measures, the discussion is now back on to run at least two diameter lines across Domplatz and set line A. A step whereby the old town would also have a direct connection in the evenings and on weekends.

There are plans to convert line "A" completely to battery-powered e-buses as part of the city administration's e-mobility strategy. In 2015, tests were carried out with models from various manufacturers. At the beginning of May 2017, five new electric buses from the Italian manufacturer Rampini went into operation. With a length of 7.72 meters and a width of 2.20 meters, the buses are much smaller than the diesel buses previously used and offer 14 seats, standing room for 25 and a wheelchair space. The batteries are charged during the day at a quick charging station below the Galgenberg Bridge and at night at the depot of the Regensburger Verkehrsbetriebe GmbH.

Special lines

The Regensburg Dult am Oberen Wöhrd is accessed by means of its own free bus line. This runs from the “Wöhrdstraße” stop over the Nibelungen Bridge and stops in front of the Danube shopping center, from here you can drive to Dultplatz without any further stops.

For public ice skating, games of the Eisbären Regensburg and concerts in the Danube Arena, the additional line "D" runs from the main station via Dachauplatz and Weichs to the Danube Arena.

During SSV Jahn Regensburg football matches, the "F" line serves as a feeder from the main train station to the Regensburg arena. After the game, the special line runs back to the main station.
