The Stadtwerder , erroneously also Werderinsel , more rarely called Werder , is a peninsula in Bremen . " Werder " means river island.

location

The Werder extends in the Neustadt for about six kilometers between the Weser and the Kleiner Weser , which flows into it at the height of the Teerhofspitze and which merges further east into the Werdersee , to habenhausen . On the land connection there, it is protected against a flood channel by a summer dike , while a small canal was built through the diked area to secure it with gate valves .

The most important access road is Werderstrasse , which runs parallel to the Weser from the Teerhof and Franziuseck to the Kuhhirtenweg.

history

The area of Stadtwerder has been used as pasture land since ancient times , which is why the area was also called Kuhwerder , later there were several bleaching areas here . The eastern part of Stadtwerder originally belonged to habenhausen , the western part was under the Bremen council . There were different parts: the Tanzwerder (also Danzelwerder or Danselwerder ) near the city, the Ziegelwerder , the Sesenthom on the Kleine Weser ( handed down as up to the Sessenthome since 1259 ), the Dannenkamp , the Amtskamp and the Kuhwerder . The Teerhof at the western end was separated from the rest of Stadtwerder by the fortress and powder tower, Braut und Gräben, and served as a shipyard. In 1872 the area of Stadtwerder was incorporated.

At Kuhhirtenweg 7 there is the excursion bar and restaurant Der Kuhhirte and the Hotel zum Kuhhirten . The cowherd building was first mentioned in 1662. The cowherds were appointed by the Bremen Senate. In 1867 the preserved and often renovated house and the tower were built. In the local for milk sales , beer and brandy were also served (without a permit). In the cowherd, SV Werder Bremen was founded in 1899 by the son of the cowherd at the time with a few friends. In 1930 the dance hall was built in the cowshed. The Heuboden day care center for the elderly and the bowling alley were opened in 1964. After it was vacant around 1993/95, the property was renovated.

use

Almost at the top of the Teerhof is the New Weserburg Museum for Contemporary Art. The Weserburg is the only evidence of the former development of the Teerhof after it was almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. To the east, the area was rebuilt with residential houses in the 1990s and connected to the old town by an additional footbridge. To the east of the Wilhelm Kaisen Bridge are the headquarters of the DGzRS and the University of Nautical Sciences and the waterworks was located here until the end of the 20th century. The most striking building in this area is the water tower, built in the historicist style in 1871–73, colloquially known as the " upside-down chest of drawers " due to its special shape . A residential complex has been built next to the water tower since 2010. Several citizens' groups are resisting the planned clearing of forests on both sides of the island. The middle part, which is up to one kilometer wide, consists mainly of allotment gardens, sports facilities, a sports school and a large local recreation area with sunbathing lawns and a beach at Café Sand with the landing stage for the Sielwall ferry from Halöver . Further to the east is the " Neue Weser " nature reserve .

Infrastructure

Werder can be reached in the Teerhof area via the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Brücke and the Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke by bicycle, public transport and by car. About the in Hastedt located Weserwehr there is a pedestrian and bicycle connections to the nature reserve. A spiral ramp provides the foot and bike connection to the Karl-Carstens-Bridge ("Strawberry Bridge ") between Hastedt / Peterswerder and habenhausen. In the south there is also a foot-and-bike bridge over the small Weser to the Buntentorsdeichschart. In the southeast the military road leads to the "root" of the peninsula. There are cycle paths throughout Stadtwerder that are in good condition and are also suitable for skaters. At Café Sand , the Sielwall ferry connects to the Ostertor and Steintor districts across the Weser.
