Die Zeitschrift der Straße ( spelling DIE ZEITSCHRIFT DER STRASSE ) is a street magazine in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen with a strong local focus, which is produced and marketed as part of a social joint project. The magazine is the publication of Bremen and Bremerhaven mainly by homeless sold on the street. It has been based in Bremen at Lloydhof, Hanseatenhof 9 , since 2014. The project as well as the concept and design of the magazine have received several awards.

The magazine of the street is the first locally produced and oriented street magazine in the state of Bremen. The magazine was initiated by Professor Michael Vogel , head of the Cruise Tourism Management course at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences , who was looking for a practical project for his students and who noticed that Bremen did not yet have its own street newspaper. Vogel addressed the Inner Mission in Bremen and the Bremen University of the Arts (HfK), whereupon a joint project was formed. After a long preparatory phase, the first issue, the Sielwall edition, was published on February 2, 2011 . From then on, the magazine was published every 6–8 weeks, now it appears every 8 weeks. The circulation was initially 14,000 copies and has been 13,000 copies since the beginning of 2012. The magazine has a length of 48 pages.

Universities and Diakonie in the state of Bremen work together for the magazine, which "aims to secure an income opportunity for homeless and needy people in the state of Bremen" . The magazine is mostly made by students  - as well as by (young) authors from Bremen , freelance journalists and homeless people, etc. - and sold on the street by those in need. The sellers, who are mostly homeless, are supported and looked after by street workers . The magazine of the street is thus at the same time a social project, a media project and a learning project, as well as an economic enterprise. While homeless people and sometimes other needy people sell, students design the magazine and most of the texts and can gain practical experience in their studies and receive certificates of achievement. The long-term goal of the project is to “create permanent jobs that are subject to social security contributions for good salespeople”.

The selling price of the magazine der Straße is 2.00 euros. The magazines are given to the sellers at a price of EUR 1.00 per copy, so that they generate a profit of EUR 1.00 for every magazine sale.

The project received an award in an interdisciplinary ideas competition in December 2011. In addition, the magazine der Straße received several international awards and design prizes for its concept and design . Among other things, it was awarded three times by the renowned Type Directors Club (TDC) in New York City and at the same time selected by a jury member for a presentation in the upcoming TDC yearbook Typography 33 .

The magazine of the street is a member of the international network of street papers ( International Network of Street Papers , INSP).

Concept and implementation

The project and marketing concept for their own Bremen street newspaper was developed from 2009 by students at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences under the direction of Bremerhaven's tourism management and business administration professor Vogel. On this basis, students at the University of the Arts Bremen, in a workshop with the Swiss designer Ludovic Balland and under the direction of the Bremen communication and corporate design professor Andrea Rauschenbusch, developed a magazine design, "[which] tries to create a modern appearance [... ] to convey socially critical and local issues equally ”. Each issue deals with a street , from which the name resulted, or with a place from Bremen or Bremerhaven. The authors are required to “observe what is happening in the square or the street” and “base their text on it”. The “observations” of the respective street space or urban location form the starting point for reports, reports , interviews , essays , photo series and artistic illustrations . In addition, each issue also includes literary contributions such as prose , fairy tales , poems and more. According to the project team, the street or the place are "not [thematized] as a metaphor for social misery, but as a place of public life".

The editorial team has been headed by the freelance journalist Armin Simon from Bremen since October 2010 . Most of the authors are students from all universities in Bremen and Bremerhaven; most of the literary contributions come from writers and authors related to the state of Bremen, such as Cora Frost , Corinna Gerhards, Anja Kümmel , Karsten Redmann, Imke Müller-Hellmann, Janine Lancker, Jens Laloire, Stephan Reich, Haleh Soleymani and Renate Ullerich. Students at the HfK Bremen are responsible for photography , layout , design and prepress , while marketing and events are part of the tasks of the student team at the Hochschule Bremerhaven.

The design of the magazine was deliberately designed to be “irritating”, according to the project team, “to challenge viewing habits and thought patterns instead of confirming them”. The magazine appears in an unusual portrait format . The upper section, which is just under a quarter of the overall format, is printed “transversely” to the lower main part and can be separated using a perforation . It contains general information about the magazine and the project as well as diary-like “observations” on each article, but also consists of unprinted (partial) pages. Rauschenbusch describes the typeface chosen for the magazine as "not beautiful, not ugly, but above all eye-catching". In addition to the photographs, this is a component that defines the appearance of the magazine der Straße .

The street magazine was initially printed on white paper with a basis weight of 115 g / m². After criticism from the sellers that the first issues looked too much like high-gloss magazines, the company has now switched to recycled paper , with which the sellers can better identify. In addition, a slightly thinner paper was chosen so that the booklets are easier to transport for the sellers.

At the moment (2012) around twelve authors are working on the magazine, most of whom are students from Bremen universities, as well as around twelve designers; there is also a five-person marketing team, two volunteer supervisors from the sales office and some employees from the Inner Mission. More than 120 men and women are registered as salespeople on the project, but only a few are on the job every day.

Market environment

One of the decisive factors behind the founding of the magazine der Straße was that, unlike in other large cities in Bremen and Bremerhaven, there was previously no street newspaper of its own. The Berliner Strassenfeger and the Hanoverian Asphalt-Magazin were and are sold there, but they have no editorial relevance to the local area. Nevertheless, the active sellers of the new Bremen street magazine have mostly offered the Asphalt magazine at the same time . The Inner Mission Bremen, as one of the project sponsors, conceded a competitive situation between the two sheets at the end of 2011. Bertold Reetz, the head of the homeless assistance at the Verein für Innere Mission in Bremen , referred to the different concepts on the one hand and on the other hand sees "in the long run [no] space for two homeless newspapers [...] despite the gradually different target groups".
