A navigation school was established in Bussestrasse in 1879, and in 1884 it became the municipal technical center (later a ship engineering school ). In Geestemünde there was also the Prussian Maritime Engineers School in Bülowstrasse. 1927 was a ship's engineer school Bremerhaven in the Technical State schools Bremen incorporated.

In 1960, the Bremerhaven ship engineering school began teaching in a new three- story building at Columbusstrasse 21, today the converted House C as a seminar building.

The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences was founded on September 1, 1975. The basis for the establishment were

  • the marine engineering school from 1960, the 1968 engineering academy and 1970 technical college and
  • the Bremerhaven Department of the Seafaring School or Seafaring Academy Bremen (1968) which in 1970 transformed into the Bremen University of Nautical Sciences with the Bremerhaven Institute.

In 1977 the Science Council recommended federal funding for the university. In 1978, the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the Gdingen University of Applied Sciences signed a cooperation agreement on the training of ship officers. Further collaborations u. a. with the Oldenburg University of Applied Sciences , the Wilhelmshaven University of Applied Sciences and the Cuxhaven Maritime School followed. In 1984 the training for qualified nautical engineers ( captains on long voyages ) ended. In the 1974/75 winter semester, in addition to the traditional nautical and marine engineering courses, the operational and supply engineering course was added, and the transport engineering course in the 1976 summer semester.

In 1983 the foundation stone was laid for the new buildings (House M) on the site of the former Karlsburg brewery . According to plans by the architect Gottfried Böhm (Cologne), the first red stone-visible buildings were completed by 1985. Parts of the building of the emigrant house from 1849/50 were included in the planning, connecting old with new building elements. The round tower is reminiscent of the old fortifications of the Swedish fortress Carlsburg from the 17th century. In 1989 a second construction phase followed with the laboratory wing and the square tower for the administration (House V).

In 2000, 1171 students were enrolled at the university, who were supervised by 69 professors and 69 other employees. In 2003/04 the number of students increased to 2064, of which 15% were foreign and 29% were women.

The extension (House S), which was opened in 2005 by the architects Kister, Scheithauer, Gross (Cologne), was awarded the Prize of the Association of German Architects in 2006. It houses the library, two lecture halls, 20 seminar rooms, the data processing laboratory and a dean's office. In 2011 House T was completed by the same architects.

In 2014, the new cafeteria was opened in house K in the rooms of the old cafeteria.
