history

The roots of Stadtwerke Kiel go back to 1856, when the first "municipal gas station" opened on November 11th at the Waschhof am Kleiner Kiel (today's location of the Kiel town hall) on the corner of Fleethörn. The main task was initially only to supply the street lighting systems with gas, later also to deliver it to residential buildings and commercial rooms for lighting purposes.

With the establishment of the “Städtische Wasserwerke” in 1870, the water supply for the people of Kiel was secured. The first Kiel waterworks on the Alte Lübecker Chaussee was operated from 1880 to 1896. From 1889 the water supply was ensured by the “Schulensee” waterworks.

When the gas works in Ernestinenstrasse went into operation in 1900, it was renamed “Municipal Gas, Electricity and Water Works in Kiel”. In addition, they received their own seal. Just one year later, the city's electricity supply was guaranteed by the “Humboldtstrasse” power plant.

Stadtwerke Kiel did not get its final name until 1937. In that year, the street lighting in Kiel will be 100 percent electric. The Stadtwerke are now owned by the city of Kiel and the name of the “Städtische Licht- und Wasserwerke” no longer fits.

Stadtwerke Kiel became a stock corporation (AG) in 1965. This was initially done by reorganizing its own operations into a stock corporation and forming a group with Kieler Verkehrs-AG (KVAG) under the umbrella of the corporate group VVK (Supply and Transport Kiel). Since 2004, MVV Energie AG from Mannheim has held a 51% majority stake in the Kiel municipal utility.

Power plants

The new building, to the left of the previous power plant

Stadtwerke Kiel operated a coal-fired power plant ( joint power plant Kiel ) with an output of 354 megawatts together with Uniper until April 2019 . At the beginning of April 2019, the coal-fired power plant was shut down and replaced by a new gas engine cogeneration plant on the east bank of Kiel, construction of which began in 2016. The new power plant is called KIEL coastal power plant , which stands for "Kiel's intelligent energy solution".

Other plants are the Humboldtstrasse thermal power station with 28 MW and the Raisdorf 1 + 2 hydropower stations with around 2 megawatts. The waste-to-energy plant on Theodor-Heuss-Ring has not belonged to the municipal utilities since 1988, but feeds around 5.8 MW into the municipal utilities network.

Waterworks

Stadtwerke Kiel supplies around 330,000 residents with drinking water. The drinking water supply area covers an area of approx. 245 km 2 and the length of the pipe network is approx. 1,800 km. The SWK operates four waterworks: the “Pries waterworks” with a delivery rate of approx. 7000 m 3 / day, the “Wik waterworks” with a delivery rate of approx. 2000 m 3 / day, the “Schulensee” waterworks with a delivery rate of approx 30,000 m 3 / day and the “Schwentinental waterworks” with a delivery volume of approx. 16,000 m 3 / day.
