Standard Thesaurus Economics
The Standard-Thesaurus Wirtschaft (STW) contains 6000 key words for the representation and research of economic content. The STW is constantly being further developed by the ZBW - German Central Library for Economics and is available in German and English.
history
The STW was created in the mid-1990s from a funding project by the Federal Ministry of Economics in order to standardize the indexing and research vocabulary in economics. The project was carried out by the ZBW, the GBI Society for Business Information (today: GBI-Genios ) and the HWWA Institute for Economic Research , Library (today: ZBW Hamburg location).
Maintenance and further development
The STW is permanently adapted to the changes in economic terminology by a permanent thesaurus editorial team. A new version is released every year. From 2011 to 2015 the STW was completely revised.
use
Within the ZBW, the STW is used for intellectual indexing and literature research in the specialist portal EconBiz , on the publication server EconStor and for the magazines Wirtschaftsdienst and Intereconomics published by the ZBW .
The STW is used at home and abroad as a knowledge organization system:
- GBI-Genios Deutsche Wirtschaftsdatenbank GmbH: commercial provider of electronic press, company and business information
- Ifo Institute - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research at the University of Munich
- DIW Berlin - German Institute for Economic Research

- V economics
- B business administration
- W economic sectors
- P products
- N related sciences
- G Geographical terms
- A general words
Terms and their designations as well as the relationships to other terms are summarized in the STW into term data sets. In addition to the preferred designation, possible explanations and the synonyms and quasi-synonyms under "used for", one or more notations of the thesaurus systematics as well as hierarchy and relationships are listed.
Publication as LOD
In 2009, the ZBW published its standard economics thesaurus as linked data on the web. For this purpose, the STW was converted to the SKOS format. The data can be downloaded in RDF / XML, Ntriples and Turtle formats .
The STW data are freely available under the Open Database License .
