Franz Wawrik

Franz Wawrik (born July 21, 1940 in Vienna ; † July 27, 2013 ) was an Austrian cartography historian and director of the map collection and globe museum of the Austrian National Library in Vienna as well as an author on the history of cartography .

Career

Wawrik studied history and geography at the University of Vienna from 1961 . He received his doctorate in 1967 with Günther Hamann with the dissertation The Anglo-Dutch Relationship in the Malay Archipelago at the beginning of the 17th century . After completing his studies, Wawrik trained as a scientific librarian at the Austrian National Library in Vienna . In 1986 he was appointed director of the map collection and shortly afterwards he was appointed councilor . Wawrik was the author and editor of numerous scientific publications in the field of cartography history as well as the organizer of several cartography-historical exhibitions and conferences, such as B. the 16th International Conference on the History of Cartography in Vienna. His specialty was cartography from the 15th to 17th centuries. Wawrik worked for many years as Vice President of the International Coronelli Society for Globe Studies and since 2006 has been the publisher of the scientific journal Der Globusfreund .
