Stanisław Balbus (2014)

Stanisław Balbus (born May 8, 1942 in Sieradz ) is a Polish literary critic , literary theorist and translator .

Life

Balbus attended high school in Warsaw . As a schoolboy, his poem Wiosna was published in the scout magazine Na Przełaj in 1958 . After graduating from high school in 1961, he began studying Polish and mathematics at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow , and in 1962 he also studied musicology . From 1964 he only continued his studies in polonics. He joined the Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza in 1963. The Magisterin Polish Philology he acquired in 1966 and was employed as a research assistant at the Department of Polish Literature at the Jagiellonian University. He made his debut as a literary critic in 1966 with reviews in the magazine Ruch Literacki . For the magazine Zeitycie Literackie he wrote from 1967 to 1977. He also published scientific and literary critical texts as well as translations from Russian in Pamiętnik Literacki , Student and Nowe Książki . He worked as an editor and internal reviewer for the Kraków publishing house Wydawnictwo Literackie . In addition, he appeared from 1970 to 1976 (and from 1990 to 1999) in literature on TVP Kraków and from 1970 to 1998 on Polskie Radio Kraków . He received his doctorate in 1975 with the work Aktuellizacja akustyczna tekstu literackiego and was hired in 1976 as a research assistant at the Institute for Polish Philology at the Jagiellonian University. From 1978 to 2002 he lectured there on literary theory and led doctoral seminars. In 1976 he was admitted to the Union of Polish Writers , of which he was part of the Cracow department from 1980 to 1983. He joined Solidarność in 1980 and remained a member until 1991. He also worked with the magazines NaGłos (1982 to 1989) and bruLion (1987 to 1989). In 1988 he gave guest lectures at the University of Gothenburg and in the same year he became a member of the Polish PEN Club . In 1989 he was a co-founder of the Polish Writers' Association . With the work Między stylami. Strategy intertekstualne w procesie historycznoliterackim he completed his habilitation in 1989 at the Jagiellonian University and became an associate professor in 1992 . In the 1990s he published in the magazines Ruch Literacki , Dekada Literacka , NaGłos and Teksty Drugie . From 1996 to 2003 he headed the chair for literary theory at the Jagiellonian University, where he was appointed full professor in 1999 . In 1999, he was also appointed to the Presidium of the Scientific Committee for Polish Literature at the Polish Academy of Sciences . In 2012 he retired.

He lives in Krakow .
