Stanislaw Balicki

Stanisław Witold Balicki (born June 29, 1909 in Krakow , † November 27, 1978 in Warsaw ) was a Polish theater and literary critic and theater director . His brother was the actor and director Juliusz Balicki .

Life

Balicki attended school in Cracow and studied polonics at Jagiellonian University from 1927 to 1930 and at the University of Poznan from 1930 to 1932 . From 1929 he published articles and reviews in the Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny newspaper . In his last academic year 1931/1932 he was editor and editor of the magazine Dwutygodnik Literacki n Posen . After his return to Krakow in 1933 he wrote regularly for Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny. He also published in Tempo Dnia and from 1935 in Światowid and As . During the German occupation he stayed in Krakow and took part in literary life underground.

After the Second World War , he co-founded Dziennik Krakowski from January 1945 . He was also editor-in-chief of Dziennik Polski from 1945 to 1950 , founder and editor-in-chief of Młoda Rzeczpospolita from 1946 to 1947, and of Dziennik Literacki from 1947 to 1950 . At the State Drama Theaters ( Państwowe Teatry Dramatyczne ) in Cracow he was literary director in the 1949/1950 season.

He then moved to Warsaw in 1950, where he first worked as an editor and from 1951 to 1954 as director and editor-in-chief for the State Publishing Institute ( Państwowy Instytut Wydawniczy ). At the same time he edited the monthly Teatr with Jan Alfred Szczepański . He worked in the College of the Ministry of Culture and Art from 1954 to 1956 and was one of the initiators of the Warsaw Autumn Festival . From 1957 to 1964 he was director and artistic director at the Polish Theater in Warsaw. He also published in Życie Literackie from 1960 to 1974 . He took over the general management of the Ministry of Culture and Art in 1964. He was also an editorial member of the Miesięcznik Literacki from 1965 to 1978 .
