Stanley McCrory Pargellis (born June 25, 1898 in Toledo , Ohio , † January 6, 1968 in Chicago ) was an American historian and librarian. As a historian, he mainly published on the military history of the American colonial era. 1942–1962 he was director of the Newberry Library in Chicago.

biography

Pargellis studied at the University of Nevada (BA 1918), Harvard Law School and, as a Rhodes scholar, at Exeter College at the University of Oxford (BA 1922; MA 1929). He began his teaching career as a lecturer in history and English at the California Institute of Technology (1923–1925). From 1926 to 1942 he taught at Yale University , where he received his Ph.D. in 1929 with a thesis on Lord Loudoun. PhD. As a historian, he mainly published on the military history of the American colonial era. In 1936 he published a source edition of documents relevant to military history from the archives of the Duke of Cumberland in Windsor Castle .

In 1942 he moved to the Newberry Library in Chicago , one of the world's largest independent research libraries, as senior librarian . Here he pursued a rather selective policy when it came to acquiring new books, but he made some contribution to opening up and expanding the archive holdings. He made a particular contribution to archiving documents from American economic and corporate history; so he secured the entire business archive of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad for the Newberry Library . He also underlined the importance of archives for American corporate history in two lectures to the Newcomen Society ( The Judgment of History on American Business 1943 and The Corporation and the Historian 1944). Literary studies were also close to his heart, so in the difficult 1940s he provided the magazine Poetry with grants from the library. An in-house periodical, The Newberry Library Bulletin (from 1944) , was also launched under his aegis . In 1962 he retired.
