Stapelia gigantea , also Aasblume called, is a species of plant from the subfamily of the asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). It hasthe largest flowers ofthe Stapelia species (up to 40 cm in diameter). Other species of the genus Stapelia are also referred towith the name carrion flower.

features

Stapelia gigantea grows in stem succulent , arched , upright shoots in a compact shape. They can be up to 25 cm long and reach a diameter of about 2.5 cm. The warts are only indicated, the leaflets about 2 to 3 mm long. The corolla varies from light yellow to reddish to purple with darker, twisted horizontal wrinkles and measures up to 40 cm in diameter. It sits on a flower stalk up to 6 cm long . The top is flat to slightly bell-shaped. The crown tube, which is usually much darker, is relatively flat and often surrounded by a slightly raised ring. The crown lobes reach a length of 16 cm. They are hairy on the outside and slightly hairy on the inside. The strong hair is whitish to purple and often more or less curled. The secondary crown is dark purple and short-stalked, rarely almost sessile. The interstaminal coronary lobes measure 5 to 5 × 1.5 to 2.5 mm and stand upright. They are rectangular or spatula-shaped and apically notched and have a blunt tip. The staminal coronary lobes measure 8 to 12 × 1 to 2 mm and are broadened at the base. They have an apical process and partially cover the stamens . The pollinium is brown and measures approx. 1 × 0.7 mm. They are shaped like a D.

The fruits are pale yellow.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.
