Stathmopoda pedella is a butterfly from the family of Stathmopodidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 14 to 17 millimeters. The head is light yellow. The antennae are dorsally gray, the first third is yellowish white. The antennae of the males are strongly ciliated. The thorax is yellow, the first third and the abdomen are gray-brown. The scales on the wing joint are outlined in yellow and gray-brown. The forewings are yellowish ocher to golden yellow and tinted with light brown scales that have a dark brown base. A leaden sheen is often observed. On the forewings there is an incomplete dark brown transverse band in the first and second third. The hind wings are glossy gray-brown in color. The striking Hintertibien are yellow blackish drawn and in the vicinity of the spurs and at the distal ends of the basal Tarsenglieder bristles tufted. In the typical resting position, the hind tibia are stretched almost at right angles from the body. The spurs are at right angles to the body and point slightly upwards.

Stathmopoda pedella is widespread in Europe with the exception of the far north and south-east, but the species is rarely found locally. In the south it can be found in mountainous regions. They can also be found in the Caucasus and in the Far Eastern regions of Russia . The species was introduced in North America .

Way of life

The larvae of Stathmopoda pedella live in the immature fruits of the black alder ( Alnus glutinosa ) and the gray alder ( Alnus incana ), where they mainly eat the seeds. The affected fruits have brownish spots, the excrement is expelled from the fruit. The larvae pupate in a silky cocoon in the leaf litter in October and overwinter.

Flight and caterpillar times

Stathmopoda pedella forms a generation a year that flies from late June to July. The moths are nocturnal and are attracted by light. The caterpillars can be found from August to the end of September.
