Mario Zucchelli Station in Terra Nova Bay on the Ross Sea

The Mario Zucchelli Station (MZS) is an Italian Antarctic station built in 1985 on the Ross Sea in Terra Nova Bay in Victoria Land . Until 2004 the research station was called Station Baia Terra Nova (New Earth Bay Station), after the Terra Nova Bay in which it was built, then it was named after the deceased first head of the Italian Antarctic program. The station is located on a peninsula with north-south orientation, which allows access to the sea in the east and west. It is located on an ice-free rock 15 m above sea level and 100 m from the coast.

The station consists of seven main buildings and a few additional buildings and can hold a maximum of 80 scientists. There are also the unmanned outposts Campo Icaro (climate station) and Campo Antenne (antenna farm).

Around six kilometers south of the station, near Boulder Clay , an airfield with a 2200 meter long and 45 meter wide paved runway has been under construction since 2017 and is scheduled to go into full operation in 2020. This replaces a 3000-meter-long runway that was set up seasonally on the pack ice in the bay and served by Hercules C-130 transport aircraft in the Antarctic summer , occasionally also by the Italian Air Force . The research station can also be supplied by ships operating from Lyttelton ( Christchurch ) in New Zealand , including the Italian research ship Laura Bassi (the Italica until 2017 ). The MZS, which is only operated during the summer months, also serves as a logistics base for the Franco-Italian Dome Concordia station 1,200 km away , which is manned all year round. For logistical reasons, the MZS operates smaller airfields (skiways) in the area with the names Mid Point (on the way to Dome C), Sitry , Browning Pass and Enigma Lake .

The closest stations are the German Gondwana station and the South Korean Jang Bogo station , opened in 2014 , which are both around 10 km away. The McMurdo station and the Scott station are both around 350 km away . Christchurch and Lyttelton in New Zealand are approximately 3,200 km away.

Princess Anne visited Mario Zucchelli Station in February 2002 as part of her trip to mark the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott .
