Life

Treaty between the council and Wessel from 1603

Statius Wessel came from a family of goldsmiths. His grandfather of the same name, Statius Wessel (I), was a mint master in Lübeck from 1528 to 1531. His father's name was Hans Wessel and is possibly identical to the goldsmith Hans Wessel . After his apprenticeship and traveling years, Statius Wessel became a citizen of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck on April 6, 1571. In 1603 the Lübeck council appointed him mint master. He mainly coined the Reichstaler . His mint mark was a heraldic lily

In 1600 he acquired the house at St.-Annen-Straße 4 from the head of the cathedral . In 1604 he managed the lock on the chain that closed off Fleischhauerstrasse .

Since 1592 he was married to Catharina, b. Philip († 1617), a daughter of the preacher at the cathedral Johann Philip († 1591). The daughter from this marriage, Catharina, married the council secretary Johann Feldhusen in 1613 . Statius Wessel was related to August Hermann Francke's grandmother .
