Reservoir |
The Soboth reservoir in the triangle of Carinthia, Slovenia and Styria is a storage lake and part of the Koralpe power plant , which was built between 1988 and 1993.
The nature conservation law stipulation that the reservoir must be full from June 15 to October 31, with a fluctuation of one meter in the mirror, forms the basis for the tourist use of the reservoir. In summer the lake is a popular bathing destination because of its clean water, the cooler climate due to the altitude and the natural environment of spruce forests.
The reservoir has also served as a pumped storage facility since the 2010s .
geography
The reservoir is located on the Koralpe , about halfway in the federal states of Carinthia and Styria . Nearby is the eponymous village of Soboth on the road connecting Lavamünd and Graz and the Soboth Pass near the Slovenian-Austrian border. The maximum water level is around 1080 m above sea level. A. Its natural catchment area is 29.7 km². The reservoir is about 2.6 km long and up to 970 m wide, has a surface of 0.8 km² and is up to 80 m deep.
Koralpe hydroelectric power station
The Koralpe power plant was built between 1987 and 1991 as a passive storage power plant. Between 2009 and 2011, the power plant was expanded into a pumped storage power plant .
The 50 MW station is located on the banks of the Drau and near Lavamünd at 339 m above sea level. The water is led from the storage facility to the power plant via a five-kilometer-long pressure tunnel and a three-kilometer-long pressure pipe. The maximum difference in height of the pipeline is 735.5 m.
