The Sainte-Bernadette Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in the northeastern district of les Grésilles in the Burgundian capital Dijon .

history

The modern designed square church building was designed by the founding pastor of the parish cathedral chapter Paul Vinceneux with the participation of the renowned architect Joseph Belmont as part of an architectural competition in 1960. On May 10, 1964, after two years of construction, the building was consecrated by the Bishop of Dijon André Charles de la Brousse . The Sainte-Bernadette church is a characteristic example of modern church architecture in France in the 1960s; an important central building of the 20th century in the Catholic area, which consistently implemented the idea of a central church.

The importance of the building for 20th century architecture was recognized by the fact that it was classified as a Monument historique on February 25, 2011 .

Building description

The church was built in anticipation of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council. The one with flat roof covered building complex in the international style offers two levels space for a large church hall with a capacity of 1,200 people on the upper level and a smaller community hall for 800 believers and a chapel with 120 seats on the lower level. The lower worship rooms with chapel and crypt rest on slender columns that support the high square nave. The lower level protrudes on all four sides and is covered there by roofs curved like a tent sheet. The low square tower at the foot of the church hill houses several bells. On its roof rises a slim lancet , almost twice as high , which carries a cross. Belmont designed the in reinforced concrete - frame construction built building with a screened light gray curtain wall . The elongated, symmetrically structured cuboid structure does not reveal any ribbon windows.

The restrained formal language of the international style shows clear references to the Sacré-Cœur de Bonnecousse church in Aussillon, also realized by Joseph Belmont .
