Ste-Madeleine is a Magdalen church in Aix-en-Provence in the south of France . It is located in the old town on the Place des Prêcheurs and used to belong to a Dominican monastery . The church is best known as the installation site for the Annunciation of Aix triptych .

The building of the baroque church was built around 1700 with the inclusion of Gothic elements. The church facade was not built until the 19th century.

In 1839 Paul Cézanne was baptized in the church.

In the left aisle of the church hangs the Annunciation by Aix , considered an important work of the Avignon School . It was made for Aix Cathedral in the mid-15th century and clearly shows characteristics of Dutch painting . The painting shows the setting in a Gothic church, in which the Archangel Gabriel and Our Lady kneel before each other. The side wings of the three-part altarpiece were separated in the 17th century and found their way into the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Amsterdam . They show the prophets Jeremias and Isaiah and have only recently been assigned to the central panel. For a long time a prominent Dutchman was suspected to be the author of the work, for example the " Master of Flémalle " (possibly Robert Campin ). It is now assumed that it is a work by Barthélemy d'Eyck .

Other precious treasures of the church are a canvas painting attributed to Rubens and a marble sculpture of the Blessed Virgin .

organ

The organ was built in 1743 by the organ builder Jean-Esprit Isnard. The instrument has 43 registers (approx. 3,500 pipes) on three manual works and pedals .
