Steel Challenge ( German  steel challenge ) is a shooting sport discipline .

particularities

The Steel Challenge only shoots at (round or rectangular) steel plates. A special feature here is that there are no hit zones (" rings " / points), but rather, similar to target shooting , a distinction is only made between hit and error.

No hinged panes are used in the Steel Challenge , which means that the steel plates do not fall over, but the hits are recognized by the acoustic ("pling") and visual impression that occurs when the bullet hits the steel plate.

Rating classes

The following competition classes are usually offered in Europe :

  • Gun open class:
Pistols without restriction, d. H. usually with optical sights ( red dot sights )
  • Standard class pistol
Pistols without compensator and with open sights
Revolver without restriction
  • Standard class turret
Revolver without compensator and with open sights

In all four classes, as is usual in large-bore shooting , only calibers from 9 mm (0.354 inch ) are permitted. The minimum impulse of the bullets is 110,000 grain * feet / second .

In addition, the small caliber class is often offered, for which no minimum pulse applies and which is limited to caliber .22 lfB .

The weapons must be suitable for carrying in a holster .

Scoring system

The scoring is based solely on the time the shooter needs to properly complete all of the sub-exercises.

Each sub-exercise ( English stage ) is shot five times by each shooter, of which the four best runs are scored. (Exception: The partial exercise "Outer Limits" is shot four times, of which the three best runs are counted.)

In each round ( English string ) there are five targets to be shot at, which must be hit in any order, with the exception of the stop plate, which must be hit last. The number of shots to be fired is not subject to any restriction, i.e. targets that are not hit may be shot again.

Procedural penalties are punished by three seconds to reach time added to. The maximum time per run is 30 seconds.

The time required for the respective rounds is measured electronically and determines the result; the shooter with the lowest total time wins.

Championships

The European Steel Challenge is held annually in Winterswijk ( Netherlands ). In Germany, Steel Challenge has been state approved as a discipline of the BDS since November 17, 2014 ; the BDS now offers local, regional and national competitions up to German championships.

The only Steel Challenge so far held in Germany took place in Philippsburg in 2012 .
