Steen Olaf Welding

Steen Olaf Welding (born November 6, 1936 in Viljandi / Estonia ; † June 13, 2019 in Braunschweig) was a German philosopher and university professor. He retired in 2001 and continued to publish philosophical essays and books.

biography

Steen O. Welding studied philosophy and history from 1960 to 1969 at the Universities of Göttingen, Hamburg and Graz. In 1969 he received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen. From 1972 to 1974 he received a research grant from the DFG on the subject of "On the Concept of Logical Functions" ; the results of this research have been published in essays on logic. From 1971 he was a lecturer in philosophy at the University of Göttingen, 1975 at the University of Marburg, and 1977 at the PHN Braunschweig. He went blind in 1976.

From 1978 he was a research associate at the Department of Philosophy at the Technical University of Braunschweig , then an adjunct professor of philosophy. In 1991 he completed his habilitation at the TU Braunschweig with the habilitation thesis: Fundamenta Ethica. The justification structure of morality.

Work areas

Welding's topics are logic, philosophy of mind, epistemology, ethics and the history of philosophy. Critical to his work are his critical investigations on the principle of excluded contradiction , the Gettier problem , the problem of universals , Wittgenstein's late work and the philosophy of mind.
