Stefán Einarsson

Stefán Einarsson (born June 9, 1897 in Höskuldsstaðir , Breiðdalur ; † April 9, 1972 in Reykjavík ) was an Icelandic philologist .

Life

Stefán was the son of a farmer. He studied in Reykjavík , Helsinki and Oslo and in 1927 came to Baltimore as a research assistant at Johns Hopkins University . There he was appointed professor of Scandinavian philology in 1945. In 1962 he returned to Iceland, where he lived in Reykjavík until his death.

Stefán has authored several books, including a textbook on the Icelandic language and two English-language works on Icelandic literary history. He has also edited works by Icelandic writers and anthologies.

In 1939 he received the Knight's Cross of the Icelandic Order of Falcons . In 1954 he was elected a member of the American Philosophical Society .
