Stefan Auer , Romanian Ștefan Auer , Hungarian István Avar (born May 28, 1905 in Arad , Austria-Hungary ; † October 13, 1977 in Kaposvár , Hungary ) was a Romanian and Hungarian football player and coach of old Austrian origin. In order to avoid confusion with his teammate János Auer from AMEF Arad , he was listed in the Romanian sports press as Auer II .

Career

Stefan Auer began his football career at AMEFA in Arad, which fell to Romania after the First World War . As a player of this club, he scored his first international goal in his first international match on April 25, 1926 against Bulgaria . Auer moved to Colțea Brașov in the same year and scored twice in a 3-3 win against Poland on June 19, 1927 on his second and last appearance for the Romanian national soccer team . After the defeat in the replay of the final for the Romanian championship in 1926/27 , the new Romanian star striker was brought to Hungary in the Borsodi League shortly after by the then top club Újpest Budapest . In 1930, 1931, 1933 and 1935 the striker was Hungarian champion four times and was also able to celebrate great international successes. With Újpest he came to the final of the Mitropa Cup in 1929 and was able to win this 5-1 and 2-2 against Slavia Prague . Stefan Auer was the top scorer of the competition with a new record of ten goals. A year later, the striker and his club were victorious in the Coupe des Nations 1930 .

The strong performances at Újpest meant that the Hungarian association appointed the former Romanian national player to the Hungarian national team from 1927 . In this, Stefan Auer always appeared as István Avar. In only 21 international matches for Hungary, the striker scored 24 goals, including eight goals in the European Cup of National Soccer Teams 1931 to 1932 , which brought Hungary third place and Stefan Auer another title of top scorer. Furthermore, the striker took part in the 1934 World Cup in Italy, where he made it to the quarter-finals. In 1936 Stefan Auer returned to Romania and joined Rapid Bucharest , where he served as player- coach until December 1939 . With Rapid he won the Romanian runner- up in the 1937/38 season and was the top scorer of Divizia A in 1939/40 with 21 goals. In the same season Rapid reached the final in the Mitropapokal in 1940 , which was no longer held due to the Second World War . After the first half of the 1940/41 season Auer ended his engagement with Rapid. He settled in Hungary and continued his career at Kaposvári Rákóczi SC . In 1945 he retired after an interlude at Kashav and became a coach at Kaposvári Rákóczi SC.
